Winter storm underway...

>> Monday, January 10, 2011

Snow continues to develop into the region this morning. All in all, looks like things are behaving according to plan. As of 6am, many areas just west of Charlotte have already seen 3" with some 6" and 7" totals down in the Upstate.

Here is the call map I am using on air this morning. As always, there will be some localized variations.

In time today into tonight, drier air aloft will work in, and the result will be snow transitioning to sleet and then mainly freezing rain. Not a huge ice storm for the I-85 corridor, but a glazing of ice sure seems possible. Down into the midlands of SC, a quarter to maybe even a half inch of ice is possible on top of the snow.

What a crazy severe winter this year has been so far. I have live in Charlotte for over 10 years, and I can't remember it ever being this cold or this wet during that time frame. It just keeps snowing, and staying cold!!!!!

Matthew have you seen the radar...those dryslots...are they going to fill in or is that going to drop acc. considerably?

Is upstate SC (Fort Mill / Rock Hill area) out of the woods for major icing? I hear that parts of SC could see .25-.50", but it's not clear if that includes this area. Thanks, and enjoy a VERY busy day!

It seems as if the dry slots are increasing rather than filling in.

The dry slots look as if they are going to decrease our totals.

Dry slots are definitely a concern. However, we should see a fairly steady push of precip lift up from SC into NC through late morning into early afternoon. That will be the Triad's and Triangle's best chance of accumulation.

Ice is not a HUGE concern around the CLT metro, but I do think a glazing is possible tonight.

Yup, it looks like all the moisture is to our south (of Charlotte). Doesn't look good.

Matthew will that northward push also help hickory through statesville? or will it be too east then?

Matt, I was looking at radar and is of looking like the low may develop farther offshore and keep the cold locked in?

We have 4.5 inches of snow that i measured at 8am off the Kannapolis Parkway in Kannapolis. The next band is fixing to move back in. I do have a question here at the house I have a accuweather weather station and my temp is 24.1 but on your broadcast it has 28. Where is the station at for concord that calls in the reports?

I hate to disagree with your map.. I just dont see 2-4 for our area.. this system looks to me as if it is already weakening as it heads northeast.. JUST to dry and by the time the low heads up the coast, all the moisture will stay well east.. another disappointment for me as I stayed up all night watching the moisture move in since 2:15 am this morning and nothing falling from the sky.

Still waiting on that good snow band Matt, it seems to be dying at the NC line. Is it going to move north?

Dang, we go robbed. Oh well it has to happen now and again. Thats what makes this area so interesting in the winter.

blame it on the mountains

We are getting ripped off what is going on

Being in the Fort Mill area, it's an odd twist that for once we're "just far enough south" to get snow, rather than the usual "just far enough south" to MISS snow.

Anyway, there's still a good sized slug headed up from the southeast.
We're just a few hours into a day long storm - nowhere near the tail end. Don't give up just yet. -Bill

Matt, can you please update us on the dry-slot situation? It appears Winston Salem will not be getting any accumulating snow now. Can you verify?

This storm has FAIL written all over it for the Triad. I haven't seen the first flake and don't expect to.

We have flurries finally taking place in GSO

Just spoke with my mother in Welcome, NC (Just south of WS) and she said it was snowing pretty good when she left for work this morning around 7am. A good 2" she said was on the ground and it was tapering off a bit. She actually slid off the road in Lexington.
