Weekend changes...

>> Friday, March 18, 2011

Had to make some fairly significant adjustments to the weekend forecast this morning. Our cold front will likely move in 12-15 hours earlier than previously expected, and because of that, I really had to shave some degrees off of our high temp forecast tomorrow. So, after lower 80s today with near record highs, probably mid 70s tomorrow around CLT and around 70 for the Triad.

Sunday is looking fairly chilly...probably a lot of 50s for the Piedmont for highs....and lots of clouds. A few showers are looking possible as well...especially around I-40 and points north.

We return to the 70s early next work week before a system moves through Wednesday into Thursday. Behind that system, I am still expecting a pretty significant push of cooler air to end the week.

Super Full Moon...

Tomorrow's full moon will be the closest it has been to Earth in 18 years. The moon will appear 14% larger and 30% brighter than normal. Check it out on the eastern horizon Saturday evening.

Beautiful....

>> Thursday, March 17, 2011

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Simply put, the weather this afternoon will be fantastic with highs close to 70 and full sun. Highs tomorrow will be close to 80, and many places could be a degree or two warmer than that Saturday.

Highs will return to the 60s Sunday, but we will be right back up around 80 or so again Tuesday and Wednesday next week.

If you have been following along here on the blog and video, you know I have been discussing the possibility of a late-season blast of cold air later this month. That the Lakes and Northeast would get cold again was a foregone conclusion. But I am more confident today that the shot of cold air will make it, at least briefly, into the Carolinas toward the end of next week.

See the video (in the post below) for more...I also explain why the potential cold shot would likely not last terribly long.

NCAA bracket...

I probably have less confidence in my bracket this year than most years in recent memory. We will see how the games shake out. However, aside from maybe the opening day of college football season, today and tomorrow are probably my two favorite sports days of the year. Looking forward to another great tournament.

St. Patrick's Day

Milder weather set to move in...

>> Wednesday, March 16, 2011

Here is today's edition of the Carolina Weather Video. After a chilly day yesterday, a big warm-up begins today and culminates with highs around 80 Friday afternoon. Down the road, some potential changes as next week unfolds. Check out the video for possibilities....

After a chilly day yesterday, where it was a struggle to even make it to the upper 40s and lower 50s, it will turn out much milder today with highs in the mid 60s. Even warmer conditions are on tap tomorrow through Saturday. Highs tomorrow will be close to 70....then close to 80 Friday!

Looks like a brief wedging event will settle in Sunday and Monday, returning highs to the 60s. However, we look to be right back up into the upper 70s or so for Tuesday. While I can't rule out a brief shower Sunday night or Monday, it will likely be later next Wednesday before our next good rain chance arrives.

NAO...

The NAO is plunging into the negative category, and it is a certainty that some very cold air will invade the Great Lakes and Northeast next week. However, what is not certain is how far south that push of cold air will make it. If it does make it here, it will be after our mid-week system next week.

Showers rolling in today...

>> Tuesday, March 15, 2011

**I am away from the weather office today, so no video.**

However, I wanted to put up a quick post hitting the highlights for you. Our next system is rolling in, and rain will continue to spread in from the west. It will be a chilly day along the I-85 corridor with highs at most in the low to mid 50s. I still anticipate some spots staying in the upper 40s, especially in the northwest Piedmont and foothills.

Showers will end later this evening. Total rain amounts should be between 0.25" and 0.75" on the upper end. So, nothing huge, but hopefully enough to wet things down nicely again.

After this system departs, another big-time warming trend will settle in. As soon as tomorrow, highs will warm well into the 60s. 70s returns Thursday, and I still expect upper 70s and even some lower 80s Friday.

Cooler with some rain chances...

>> Monday, March 14, 2011

St. Louis has been fascinating to watch this morning. The city has literally been right on the dividing line between heavy snow and heavy rain. NW section of the city continue to have heavy, wet snow....some rain involved in southeast sections.

Here is a link to the traffic cams around the STL area.

What a fantastic weekend around here! Highs surged way up into the 70s yesterday.....even upper 70s in some spots. What a day....

Back to a cooler reality today though with mid to upper 50s around the I-40 corridor and lower 60s around Charlotte. We will see a good deal of clouds, and a little light rain is possible in the northwest Piedmont and foothills especially.

A better chance of rain will roll into the region later tomorrow as the next system actually swings through. A cold air damming scenario will be in play, and highs will struggle into the upper 40s and lower 50s in the favored damming regions.

If you are wanting warmer weather again....hang on....it is coming. Highs by Thursday will return to the 70s, and I think some spots might very well near 80 Friday!

Early next week looks quite warm with a big upper level ridge in the eastern US....However, the NAO is headed back into the negative territory, and that will mean more cold air into at least the Great Lakes and Northeast.....we will see if it makes it this far south eventually later this month.
