Scattered storms today...

>> Saturday, May 14, 2011

Looks like a good number of scattered storms will fire off later today. A soupy airmass is still in place, and we will have a couple of frontal boundaries meandering around the region. Like we have seen the past couple of days, any storms that form could produce damaging winds and/ or large hail.

Scattered storms...

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for the mountains of NC. Scattered storms are possible anywhere across the region this afternoon and evening, and a few could produce some hail and wind.

Blogger has been having an outage for two days....making me unable to post. However, it seems to be working now, so below is today's edition of the video...

Soupy airmass remains in place...

>> Wednesday, May 11, 2011

What a line of storms overnight! I knew when I did a quick check of the radar at 9pm prior to bed and a rough night was likely in store for parts of the region. I could see already that a MCV (mesoscale convective vortex....or a tiny low pressure area formed by intense storms) had developed in eastern Kentucky, and that was making a direct path for western NC and much of SC. Indeed it did. An intense line of storms with damaging winds, heavy rain, and tremendous lightning ripped through the mountains, foothills, southern Piedmont, and a good chunk of South Carolina overnight.

We remain in a soupy airmass the next couple of days, and in this type of airmass, a few showers or storms can pop up really at any point in time.

I also still expect the chances of showers and storms to increase this weekend.

Below is today's edition of the video....I discuss all of this and more....

Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 11pm

>> Tuesday, May 10, 2011

Severe Thunderstorm Watch out for much of the region until 11pm this evening. Fairly strong wording in the watch..... hail to 3.5" in diameter and winds in excess of 70mph possible. Have a way of hearing warnings through this evening, and keep it tuned to News 14 Carolina on television for all of the latest.

Severe storms are already developing into the NC mountains, and those will spread/ develop southeastward.

Some severe weather likely...

While the atmosphere is currently 'capped' across much of that region, the cap will break later this afternoon, and I expect scattered storms to fire and extend through the evening. We will likely initially see some supercell thunderstorms with a very large hail threat and the potential for some gusty winds, and then as time unfolds, outflow boundaries/ cold pools will try to drive the storms into lines, and damaging winds will probably take over as the biggest threat.

Below is the RPM valid at 8pm.
And here are the wind and hail probabilities from the SPC.
Hail:
Wind:

Some showers and storms on the way...

Scattered showers and storms will begin to develop into the region this afternoon, and rain and storms look likely tonight. This will be a high-CAPE (instability), low-shear setup....large hail and damaging winds will be the primary severe weather threats....but I can't rule out an isolated tornado.

Here is today's edition of the video....give it a look....

Unsettled weather ahead...

>> Monday, May 09, 2011

I hope everybody had a wonderful Mother's Day. For most, the weather cooperated very nicely for the majority of the weekend.

Today will be pretty quiet and warm, but we are headed into a pattern that will feature a northwest flow aloft around here. Those always present forecast challenges, and this week is no different.

At this point, most signs point to a complex of showers and storms making it in here later tomorrow into tomorrow evening. Severe weather possibilities will exist....

See today's edition of the video for more information...
