Warmer, brighter weather ahead...

>> Friday, April 05, 2013

What an interesting weather day yesterday. A potent wedge made for Winter-like conditions across the region. We had some very cold rain, sleet, and even some snow in parts of the piedmont and foothills. In fact, some spots in Wilkes county had over 4 and 5" of snow reported.

Up in the mountains, it was some snow and also some ice with lots of 0.10" - 0.25" ice accumulations reported.

Much brighter and warmer weather is ahead... see the video for more...

Cold air damming setup....

>> Thursday, April 04, 2013

A pronounced cold air damming set is underway today.... very impressive. This will bring some wintry precip to the mountains and even some foothill locations and a cold, soaking rain to the piedmont.

Next system arrives tomorrow...

>> Wednesday, April 03, 2013

Another quiet day around the region today with cool high temps.

Our next storm system will roll in tomorrow. The timing of this system is a little quicker now...and it looks like the rain will arrive earlier in the day tomorrow than it appeared yesterday.

A pronounced cold air damming setup awaits this system, and this will be a chilly, soaking rain for most of us. I do note that the RPM model is being pretty aggressive with the cold air and is actually printing out some decent wintry precip in the foothills and mountains. See below.

RPM ice accumulations:

RPM snow accumulations:

This is likely overdone, but a little wintry precip certainly can't be ruled out in the northern foothills with even better chances in the mountains.

Once this system exits, the weekend will be fantastic with sunshine and milder temps.

Monday through Wednesday looks nice and warm with some spots possible hitting 80 at some point in there, especially Tuesday.

Back to below average temps....

>> Tuesday, April 02, 2013

Highs will be back below average across the region for the rest of the work week. Today and tomorrow will be dry, but then we will see a significant storm system roll in late Thursday into early Friday.

As I mentioned yesterday, if this were a month or so earlier, this would likely be a big winter storm for northern and western NC. However, for most this will be a chilly, soaking rain. See the video for more details.

We are still heading into a warmer pattern overall as we enter early next week. Highs Monday through Wednesday next week should push well into the 70s....and some low 80s are even possible in a few areas.

Here's today's video:

Mild today, then chilly again....

>> Monday, April 01, 2013

First of all, let me say that a warm pattern is on the way as we get deeper into April. The Arctic Oscillation (AO), which has been quite negative for a while, and will be through this week, will surge toward positive, as will the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). This will lead to a pattern of more sustainable warmth as the month unfolds.

But that is down the road. Before that, we will have more chilly weather for much of this week. Today will be quite nice with mild temps and sunshine. However, colder weather arrives again tonight into tomorrow, and I anticipate below average temps tomorrow through Friday.

A storm system will move through from later Thursday into Friday. If this were a month or two earlier, we could be talking about a winter storm for the upper Southeast. However, it looks like a chilly, soaking rain for the region.

See the video for much more on all of this....
