A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for the region until 9pm. Storms have begun to fire in the foothills as I am typing this, and they will continue to develop and expand eastward.

It will feel like summertime today and tomorrow with highs in the mid to upper 80s...some spots might even hit 90.
There are a couple of disturbances on the maps this morning...one in Kentucky and Tennessee and one back in the Plains. The exact timing and track of these disturbances is tricky, but generally speaking, I expect scattered showers and storms this afternoon and this evening.
Some storms today could again be strong to severe....looks like damaging winds and large hail will be the main risks today.
A cold front will drop in here tomorrow and again bring the risk of scattered showers and storms for our Saturday afternoon. And once again, some of the storms could be on the strong side.
However, that front will push to our south by Mother's Day and usher in a change to cooler and quieter weather. Sunday and Monday will feature lots of clouds at times with highs in the 70s. A few showers are possible, especially later Sunday into Monday morning.
The weather looks delightful Tuesday through Thursday next week with highs in the 70s and lots of sun. Low temps still look to drop into the 40s Tuesday and Wednesday morning.
Happy Mother's Day to all of you moms out there. You are the ones that keep the world turning.
Above is today's edition of the Carolina Weather Video. In it, I take a look back at yesterday's severe weather with some photos and storm reports. I also discuss more storm chances today as well as the outlook for Mother's Day weekend.
Below is some very cool time-lapse video of a rotating wall cloud that moves near Uptown Charlotte yesterday afternoon. Excellent job by Jim Travers putting this together!

We obviously had lots of severe weather issues around the region yesterday. Numerous tornado reports came in across central North Carolina, and flash flooding was a significant problem in some spots as well.
A powerful upper level disturbance is heading our way. This morning, an outbreak of severe weather has been ongoing across Oklahoma, Arkansas, northern Mississippi and Alabama, and those showers and storms are spreading our way.
We will likely see a good number of showers and storms around the area as today unfolds. That round of rain and storms could continue (or a second one move in) through much of tonight.
Any of the storms that develop could be strong to severe. Damaging winds and isolated tornadoes will be the primary threats, but some large hail could occur in spots.
You need to have a reliable way of hearing up to date watches and warnings. The best way is a NOAA weather radio. If you have one, make sure it is set to the alert position today and tonight.
And if and when severe weather is unfolding, as always we will be here with live coverage on News 14 Carolina to walk with you through the storms.
Some more scattered showers and storms are possible tomorrow, but how great that chance is is tough to determine right now. Let's see how tonight unfolds.
It will get fairly hot Friday and Saturday with highs back in the mid to upper 80s. At least a few PM showers and storms will be possible before a cold front knocks highs back in the 70s for Mother's Day.

We remain in an unsettled weather pattern. The Carolinas saw some showers and storms overnight, and more showers and storms are on the way as a series of disturbances rolls through the southern US.
In this type of pattern, it is very tough to nail down the specifics and timing of the shower and storm chances. However, it looks like we will see a round of showers and storms move through later this afternoon into this evening with somewhat of a lull in many spots later tonight.
Tomorrow, another disturbance will bring a round of showers and storms to the region before quieter weather arrives for Thursday and Friday.
Just like we have seen for the past few days, some storms could grow strong to severe today through tomorrow. Damaging winds and isolated tornadoes are the primary risks.
Have a reliable way of hearing weather watches and warnings, and keep it tuned to News 14 Carolina on television.
The Mother's Day weekend forecast is a bit tricky. Some of the latest modeling is indicating a shower and storm chance later Saturday and on Sunday. For this morning's forecast package, I have mentioned a chance of showers and storms for Saturday but not Sunday, but be aware that portion of the forecast will continue to be refined.
Note I have added a feed of the products issued from the GSP and Raleigh National Weather Service offices in the right side column.

A tornado warning was issued for Rockingham county in the Triad viewing area yesterday evening, and some damage occurred. A NWS team will survey the damage today.
A disturbance will cruise through the region this morning, and some scattered showers and a few storms will be possible with that. Then, another disturbance will move through the region later this afternoon and tonight. I expect a pretty healthy round of rain and storms with that second disturbance, especially this evening and tonight.
Just like we have seen the past couple of days, a few of the storms could be locally strong to severe. We will keep an eye on it.
Tomorrow's forecast is tricky. The best chance of showers and storms will likely slide to around the I-95 corridor, but I will mention isolated storms in the forecast for the Triad and Charlotte zones.
Another disturbance will bring a round of showers and storms Wednesday.
At this point, the weekend looks warm and mainly dry.
