My prayers are with all of the people impacted by the horrific earthquake and ensuing tsunami. Some of the video has just been unbelievable.

Here is a link to the tsunami coming ashore in Japan....this is like something out of a disaster movie.

And here is a tremendous whirlpool that was created.

2pm Wednesday...

Quick post here. Overall, I still think a nice rain event is on the way for the Carolinas, however, I am thinking around the I-85 corridor, the storm totals might be more around an inch or so. Convection around the Gulf of Mexico has been extremely intense, and it has been bowing out and racing ahead quickly. I feel that big bow echo entering southern Georgia is bad news for those wanting huge rain totals in the interior Carolinas.

This initial wave of rain will advance through this evening, and then we will wait and see what and where re-development takes place as the upper level energy dives in from the west. I am getting the idea that a good chunk of the development as we head into tomorrow might be east of the Charlotte and Triad zones. But we will see.

We will have to watch for severe potential, especially gusty winds, with the activity this evening. The bigger threat might be with the new development tomorrow.

It is a fluid situation, and all of this bears watching.

Fat Tuesday...

>> Tuesday, March 08, 2011

Our next storm system is gearing up to our west, and a pretty good severe weather threat exists today closer to the storm system...especially this evening in the Lower Mississippi Valley. A few stronger tornadoes are possible in parts of Louisiana and southern Mississippi.

Around the Carolinas, just some high clouds today with Piedmont highs ranging from the mid 50s to around 60 or so.

Clouds will thicken and lower tonight, and some light rain is possible as soon as the predawn hours tomorrow. Overall, tomorrow looks like a fairly chilly day with rain at times.

The core of the system will come through here later tomorrow night into Thursday morning. At that point, some heavier rain will be possible, and we will have to keep an eye on the severe potential as well. Just like the last system, instability will be lacking, but tremendous dynamics will be in place.

I don't have a good feel yet for total rain amounts, but this is another moisture-packed system, and I expect some spots (and probably many spots) in the region to do quite well.

By the way, the Canadian model has gone nuts with this thing and closes off an upper level low right overhead the area. At face value, it actually prints out some snow right underneath that upper air low. Interesting to look at, but I would not trust it any farther than you could throw it right now. It is pretty much by itself in that extreme of a solution.

System behaving as expected this morning. Rain continues to roll through and into the region, and that will continue through this morning. Some embedded storms are also possible, and any embedded storms will have to be watched for severe potential. But the potential is fairly low.

Some places around GSP have already surged past the 1" mark in total rain for this system as of 7am....amounts are less so far in the NC Piedmont. But I still think this will be a healthy rain event when all is said and done.

Some snow will move into the NC mountains on the back side of this system. In fact, wouldn't be surprised at all to see some accumulating snow in the favored upslope areas.

Sunshine returns tomorrow with a cooler, drier airmass in place.
