Super Bulldog Weekend

More on the title in a moment....

Here in the Triad, we were very fortunate that we did not have more in the way of severe weather to deal with yesterday than we did. Take a look at this damage report map from yesterday.

Several severe storms moved from extreme southern Virginia into northeastern North Carolina. While we did have some 0.88" diameter hail in Reidsville, it was much worse just north of the Triad viewing area.

Things are quiet tonight, and we are heading for the mid to upper 30s for lows tonight. That is getting close to the frost range, so you need to be careful with any tender vegetation that you have tonight.

Our next chance for a few showers and storms will come later Sunday and Sunday night, then again Wednesday. There are growing indications that we could be in a below average temperature pattern from about next Thursday through Easter weekend.

It has been a little quieter around the East household for the past couple of days. My mom was in town last weekend to go to Jayden's (our oldest daughter) Grandparent's Day at her school. Jayden has really been wanting to spend the night with Grandma, so the idea occurred to us to let her go home with Grandma since we would be heading through where Grandma lives Friday. So, off she went. That was a little hard on Daddy....keep in mind Grandma lives out of state....quite a few hours away. But, Jayden has had a blast with Grandma, and my wife and I have had a great time giving more attention than normal to our other two daughters.

Yesterday, the 4 of us went to Stone Cold Creamery. It was my first time to go, and all I can say is 'wow.' Let me give a huge thumbs up to the cake batter ice cream with brownie mixed in. Excellent stuff!

Now, on to the title of the posting. My wife and I are really looking forward to Super Bulldog Weekend this weekend at Mississippi State University. This is an annual spring homecoming event. Really, the event has turned into a huge gathering of alumni and their families. Among many other things, the highlights of the weekend include a home baseball series against Kentucky (and, if you have never been to a baseball game a Dudy-Noble, it is a wonderful experience. Left Field Lounge is one of a kind), the Spring football game, and a huge Bar-B-Que pig cooking contest.

Mississippi State is a plce my wife and I truly love, and we are very excited about taking all of the kids back there. I hope my children learn to love that place as much as I do. And, I am very excited because several of my college buddies will be on campus this weekend as well. We are looking forward to hitting all of our favorite restaurants from the college days. Many of us were meteorology majors, so that means we have been spread out all over the country since graduation and rarely get to see each other.

So, there willnot be any blog posting through the weekend, and probably not until Tuesday or Wednesday next week. As always, thanks for reading!

Mesoscale Discussion Issued for the Area

MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0359
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
0133 PM CDT WED MAR 28 2007

AREAS AFFECTED...SRN VA...NRN AND WRN NC...FAR ERN TN

CONCERNING...SEVERE POTENTIAL...WATCH POSSIBLE

VALID 281833Z - 282030Z

STORMS WILL INCREASE IN COVERAGE AND INTENSITY THROUGH THE AFTERNOON
WITH THE PRIMARY THREAT LARGE HAIL. ISOLATED STRONG/SVR WIND GUSTS
MAY OCCUR AS WELL.

SURFACE ANALYSIS SHOWS WEAK LOW OVER SRN VA AHEAD OF WEAKENING COLD
FRONT ACROSS THE APPALACHIANS...WITH WEAK FRONTAL BOUNDARY ALSO
EXTENDING SEWD INTO NERN NC. STRONG HEATING AND RELATIVELY COOL
TEMPERATURES ALOFT WITH UPPER SHORTWAVE WILL ALLOW MDT INSTABILITY
TO DEVELOP. STORMS CURRENTLY OVER THE HIGHER TERRAIN WILL LIKELY
STRENGTHEN AND SHIFT SEWD WITH TIME. ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT IS
LIKELY ALONG THE BOUNDARY FROM SRN VA INTO NRN NC. OBSERVED AND
FORECAST WIND PROFILES INDICATE WEAK BUT VEERING LOW LEVEL FLOW
BENEATH MODEST 30-40 KT MID/UPPER LEVEL FLOW. GIVEN THIS TYPE OF
HODOGRAPH...MULTICELLS APPEAR LIKELY BUT A FEW STORMS MAY BECOME
SUPERCELLS...MOVING TO THE RIGHT OF THE MEAN WIND AND PRODUCING THE
LARGEST HAIL...FROM 1.00 TO 1.50 INCH. STEEP LOW LEVEL LAPSE RATES
ALSO SUGGEST POTENTIAL FOR STRONG WIND GUSTS ESPECIALLY AS STORM
MOTIONS ACCELERATE LATER TODAY.

Thunderstorms possible into this evening...

Good afternoon. I am in the evening shift for the Triad viewing area today, so most of these thoughts are geared for that region.

I expect a decent number of showers and storms to develop into the area as the late afternoon into early evening hours unfold. The parameters aloft are such that some severe criteria hail and strong winds will be possible in any storms that develop. Also, there is an outside chance for an isoalted tornado, but hail and winds are the primary threats today.

Keep it tuned to News 14 Carolina for all of the latest weather information. If severe weather breaks out, we will be right there with you to walk you through the storms.
