Some severe storms possible today...

>> Saturday, June 21, 2008

An upper level disturbance will ripple through the region over the next 18 hours, and that will provide us with some showers and storms later today and possibly tonight. There are enough winds aloft today that some more organized storms are possible, moreso than the pulse type storms of yesterday.

Tara Lane is in the captain's chair until this afternoon, and then I will be in the weather office for the evening shift.

This will likely not be a huge severe weather event, but some potentially damaging winds and large hail will be possible along with locally heavy rain and vivid lightning.

Friday Evening...

>> Friday, June 20, 2008

We had a severe thunderstorm affect southern Mecklenburg County this afternoon. Overall, the storm was not TOO bad, but we had lots of report of gusty winds and small hail combined with heavy rain and some lightning and thunder.

We had a significant power disruption earlier in the week here at News 14 Carolina, and one of the byproducts of the power disruption is the temporary loss of the normal means of getting viewer photos immediately on the air. But, even though I couldn't get them on the air today, a big THANK YOU to all of you who emailed in reports and pictures....they are tremendously helpful. We should have that problem fixed next week.

Below are a few shots we received from viewers today...all form south Mecklenburg County.

Hail...

You often times see enough hail in thunderstorms to cover the ground, but not this much. Pretty amazing!

Aaahhhhh.....

Sure is nice out there. I had the windows down in my car driving in to work, and it was nice to actually feel a 'cool' breeze instead of a 'blast furnace' breeze. The A/C in my car works about 50% of the time at best, so I have had a lot of windows down driving recently.

Many folks were in the 50s this morning, and I expect everyone to bottom out in the 50s tonight. The record low for Charlotte tomorrow is 54 and Greensboro is 52...and it could be close for both. I am forecasting for the Charlotte market tonight, and the low temperature I am going with on air is 52.

Tomorrow and Friday's weather will remain nice with highs in the 80s and low levels of humidity. A storm system will roll through this weekend, and right now it looks like the best chance of showers and storms will be late Saturday into early Sunday.

Father's Day...

>> Sunday, June 15, 2008

For whatever reason, this has been the most meaningful Father's Day, for me personally, that I have experienced. I guess I become more keenly aware of my awesome responsibility as a father with each passing day. I continue to grow in my understanding of the responsibility I have to be the spiritual leader of my family and to be the role model to my children that I am supposed to be. Often times I fail miserably, but that will continue to be the top priority in my life.

And I guess today, when I walked down the steps this morning, seeing those kids' faces just illuminated with excitement, thrilled to sing the "Happy Father's Day Song" (which is quite similar to the "Happy Birthday" tune) to me, it just was really meaningful. They were so excited about singing and giving me my gift, and the whole reason was just to see me happy. It was really something.

So, to all you dads out there, happy Father's Day! Soak in every moment.....don't take a minute for granted.
