Brrr....

Just made a quick run to the store, and man does it feel cold out there. 5pm temps are in the 30s with wind chills in the Piedmont in the 20s. Up at Jefferson, in the mountains, the wind chill is currently 4 degrees.

Going to be very cold tonight....for the Piedmont, look for lots of lows in the upper teens. By all means, bring the pets indoors, and you probably want to protect your outdoor exposed faucets and pipes. This is a very cold night even in January.

Bundle up, throw another log on the fire, and enjoy your weekend!

Snowy start to Friday for some....

Above is this morning's edition of the Carolina Weather Video.

Snow fell this morning in the Triad over to Raleigh-Durham...and the northern portions of the Charlotte region saw some flakes as well.

The big story now becomes a significant blast of arctic air. Highs temps will struggle into the low to mid 40s today, and then I expect upper teens to lower 20s tonight.

Special Edition of the Video...Snow Chances Tonight

Above is a new edition of the video I just cut regarding the chances of some snow showers or light snow tonight and early tomorrow morning. In short, anywhere in the Piedmont is fair game to see a bit of this activity, but at most it appears we are talking about a dusting on some elevated or grassy surfaces.

Grandfather Mountain Cold...

WINTER WEATHER BREAKS DAILY LOW TEMPERATURE RECORD

GRANDFATHER MOUNTAIN, NC - Unseasonably cold weather broke the record for the daily low temperature November 19 at the official US Weather Service reporting station located next to the Mile High Swinging Bridge on Grandfather Mountain.

The temperature dipped to 8 degrees early in the morning breaking the previous daily low record of 10 degrees set in 1968.

The all time lowest temperature ever recorded in November at Grandfather Mountain is -12 degrees on November 15, 1959.

One arctic blast here...another en route....

Frigid temps to start our day today....most folks in the upper teens to lower 20s. Looks like the Charlotte airport hit 18 this morning! Brrr. Highs today will be in the 40s for the Piedmont in spite of lots of sun. However, the winds will not be a big factor today, so it will feel a bit more comfortable today compared to yesterday.

We will drop into the 20s tonight before we see one day of 50s for highs tomorrow before another big push of cold air arrives for Friday and the weekend. In fact, that next push of arctis air will be just as cold, if not a touch colder, than the current one.

Still lots of questions regarding next week. Temps should remain at least somewhat on the cool side, and some modeling indicates it could be quite chilly for Thanksgiving weekend. And I am still watching the first few days of December for a big storm system to roll through....we will see.

Convective Snow Showers

You don't see convective snow showers in the Piedmont in November too frequently. Pretty amazing. These snow showers will be gone by around sunset....they are driven by the heating of the day.

Arctic Blast Heading Our Way...

Back at the Big 14 this morning after taking a week off to enjoy some time with my family. I did not get back in town until yesterday evening, so it truly was a week away from all of the normal routine type of things. Very nice to unplug for a while and get away from the email and TV.

The big weather story over the next couple of days is the blast of arctic air that will invade tomorrow. Highs will struggle to make it up into the low to mid 40s tomorrow afternoon.....add in a stiff northwest wind, and wind chill values will be in the 20s and 30s all day long. It is also quite possible that some spots will see some flurries in the Piedmont and/or coastal plain tomorrow. I think I will pick up some stuff for chili later today....

A hard freeze will occur Wednesday morning, and we will only be in the 40s again Wednesday afternoon.

Still come conflicting signals for the weekend. The 0z run of the GFS portrayed a storm system rolling in here Sunday, while the European has no such storm for the Southeast. The 6z GFS has now flipped to a cold and dry scenario for the weekend, and I am leaning toward that solution being the correct one. We shall see.
