Storm system Saturday, cold weekend overall...

>> Friday, December 04, 2009

The main thrust of today's video is our storm system tonight and tomorrow, but I will also talk about next week and the weather pattern as we head through mid-December.

Clouds are increasing around the region today as our next storm system is taking shape in the northern Gulf. Snow is flying deep down into Texas today, and Houston will likely wind up with 3 or more inches!

That accumulating snow will spread up through parts of Louisiana, central and south Mississippi into Alabama tonight and into northwest Georgia.

For our area, I expect light rain to move in late tonight, and we will see a chilly rain for much of tomorrow morning. By midday, the window of opportunity is open for some snow to mix in with the rain, and some spots will likely see the precip end as a period of mainly snow.

For our viewing area, this will likely be more of a novelty than anything else for those that do see some snow. I don't anticipate travel problems in our viewing area, but I do think a slushy inch or two of snow could accumulate on some grassy areas and car tops.

Lows will plummet into the 20s Sunday morning, and despite sunshine, highs will only make it into the 40s Sunday.

A big rain-making system will roll through here Tuesday night and Wednesday next week.

Thanks Matt, I like the focus on the long range. Gets us past the dud events! You mentioned the models are going warm for the long range. Could you give some rationale why you think the models are off base there in the long range? Maybe in next week's videos? I like the long range discussion there. You and Jeff might actually make me go back to cable!

Brad...No problem. That is the beauty of systems this time of is not even Winter yet! The models haven't entirely gone warm in the longer range, I was meaning some other meteorologists were calling for a blowtorch December pattern to settle in. I will definitely be delving more into the medium to long range next week....

Come on back to cable...the water's fine!

what are you thinking for shelby

Are you seeing any other possible snowstorms in the long range? It looks like the GFS is trying to suggest a big one around the 16th-17th.

Its about 11:30am on sat. Radar looks as if we are done with all precep for the day. Is there going to be any "wrap-around" as the front comes through. Will it push the rain/snow to the west of us our way? The only models I can currently pull are the 0z runs and those haven't seemed to verify too well, for our area atleast. What are your thoughts

Matthew, GFS tonight is showing a major M and M *(Murphy to Manteo) Winter Storm for most of NC this weekend that would be huge! What do you think?

I am definitely interesting in this weekend. This pattern is ripe for wintry precip chances around here....first one being Friday night-Saturday.
