Cold Stuff...

>> Saturday, March 17, 2007

There was quite a bite in the air today with many folks seeing 40s for highs and gusty northwest winds. Cold conditions will be with us tonight with lows in the 20s. This will be a damaging freeze, so you need to protect your plants tonight! The winds will not be as bad Sunday as what we saw today, so while it will still be a well-below average temperature day, it will not feel as cold as today. Milder conditions move in for the new work week.

Bracket update time....I lost my first Sweet 16 team today...Maryland. But, the rest of my Sweet 16 is holding serve right now,and my Elite 8 and Final 4 are in tact. I have Georgetown in the Final Four...at the moment, they are trailing.....ugh.

*Edit to add the following* And, I forgot to mention that my Mississippi State Bulldogs played very well this afternoon and knocked off Bradley to advance in the NIT. Next game will be against Florida State Tuesday evening in Starkville. The winner of that one heads to Madison Square Garden. Go State!

And a blowout win for MSU, very impressive.

Yeah, they did play very well. How could I forget to mention that...I watched the whole game. I will have to edit the post....

Matthew you need to try to change your Bracket from Georgetown going to Final 4 to UNC.They way UNC look tonght the heels are the team to beat in the east

...and while your at it, edit your rainfall predictions for the last event. Unless you are going to use "unofficial" reading to back up your forecast like the boss did in his blog - pretty pathetic if you ask me.
The vast MAJORITY of the viewing area received well below what was forecast to be BOTH in terms of amounts and duration. The event was essentially done by 2:00PM where every media outlet was calling for an all day event into the evening with these 2-3" totals which did not verify.
Comments to the boss were censored.
All he can say is " bottom line, we needed the rain." How about, "bottom line, we need a forecast that verifies."
Maybe next time I lose a sale to my competitor I'll tell my boss, "we needed the activity."
At least you did not say "we dodged a bullet" - my most despised misuse of words by meteorologists of all time. WSUC is in love with that phrase to mask a blown forecast and hurricane boy Brad over at WCNC (aka we-see-nothing-carolina) resorts to that phrase from time to time.
You guys are better with STORMCAST than any mets in the area but when you come up short, be more like Ray up in the mountain at raysweather.com - he is human and uses a blown forecast as a tool to teach the fickle nature of wx and most of all, models.
Too much of the time, you guys just move on but in these blogs, you have a chance to teach more about the complexities of wx.
I'll keep wishing...

Ha ha...yeah, no changes allowed mid-tournament, but UNC certainly looked strong last night.

And as for the rainfall comment. I always feel open to discuss "busted" forecasts on my blog....if you look back through the archives, you can see I have done that before on a few occasions.

Now, I cannot speak for Jeff or what he was forecasting...I can only speak to what I had forcasted. Thursday and Friday, my responsibility was the Triad viewing area. That is where I was on the air those days. So, I probably should have done a better job differentiating that in my Thursday blog post, but here is what I said regarding rain amounts "I think many spots will see at least 1.5", and some locales could see up to 3"."

Well, the PTI airport received over 1.5", and the airport in Winston-Salem received over 2.25"...so, in my opinion, the forecast I put forth was a pretty good one for the area I was forecasting for.

I really do appreciate the feedback. And you should know that if I think I did a bad job with a forecast, I am never afraid to admit here in this forum. That is one of my primary goals of this blog...to try to teach some about the science of meteorology to those that are interested.

My bad, as I thought you were calling the CLT metro as well. CONGRATS on nailing the forecast for the triad. Last check CLT reported .49" inches.
I LIKE that you are using OFFICIAL readings although readings in one spot do not tell the story for the region but NOAA imagery showed similar OFFICIAL amounts for CLT proper and ALL counties bordering and including Mecklenburg.
I LOVED your response"
"That is one of my primary goals of this blog...to try to teach some about the science of meteorology to those that are interested."
That is a beautiful thing - devoid of ego and/or weak efforts to prop up UNOFFICIAL sources to cover a blown forecast.
Kudos to you, Sir Matthew, I hereby Knight you as a Master Met Web Blogger.
Jeff is getting there but his censorship dramatically weakens his blog in the face of his venting of strong opinions on a whole variety of topics.

No problem....you win some and lose some in this business.

Any and all comments are welcome. However, I will not allow profanity or personal attacks to be posted. Those are the gound rules.

Again, as always, feel free to chime in.
