Cooler, drier air blowing in...

>> Wednesday, November 23, 2011

A cold front is advancing through the region today, and breezy conditions will be the rule. In the Piedmont, winds will gust over 25 or 30mph at times....up in the mountains, winds could gust over 50 or 60mph. Piedmont highs will be in the 60s.

Fantastic weather will take hold for Thanksgiving and Friday with highs in the 60s, lows in the 30s, and tons of sun.

Next storm system...

A major storm system will swing into the region in the Sunday-Monday timeframe. The details are still a bit up in the air, but it appears a powerful upper air low will close off over the Tennessee Valley. If that's the case, we would have a healthy rain and thunderstorm event, likely including severe weather possibilities. Underneath the upper air low, some snow could occur back in the Tennessee Valley and into the mountains.

These types of features are notoriously difficult to forecast and always have surprises up their sleeves....stay tuned!

Hi Matt-

Great job as always! One question for you:

I noticed today that the GFS maps you were using were similar in fashion to the ECMWF maps. Previously, you had been using maps that were formatted slightly different for the GFS. Just curious, why the change? At first, I honestly thought you had thrown the wrong maps up when you talked about the GFS because they didn't look "right," but then I figured out that you were talking about the correct model.

I've been following along all summer and fall, but haven't commented much since last winter. Thanks for continually posting these daily forecasts; they're much better than what I get on the local news.

Hey MaTt,
I looked at Accuweather's fifteen day forecast and they have upper 40s for highs for pretty much the first week of December. Are we seeing a pattern change?

Hey Jonathan....

Hahaha....Yeah, I just found it was easier to use the WSI maps for the GFS since I was using them already for the European. I normally personally use the NCEP site for the NAM and GFS, but just because I am a creature of habit. I might stick with the WSI maps on the video just for ease.....not sure. I appreciate your kind words, and thanks for watching for sure!

Brandon...you have to keep in mind those 15 day forecast are automated and just pulling model data. But yes, the beginning of a pattern change take place with our system early next week.
