Snow leaving....Cold arriving....

>> Wednesday, February 04, 2009

As I cautioned leading up to this snow event, it would be impossible to tell in advance where the band of heaviest snow would set up. This time around, the band developed farther south than most factors indicated it would. So, the big winners this time around were from the Charlotte metro over to Montgomery county, south of RDU to around Fayetteville. In that band, 1-4" have occurred.

Travel will be very difficult in certain areas this morning. I think the morning commute will be very rough in Charlotte, and anywhere that has seen at least some snow can expect come icy spots. Lots of school systems have either canceled classes today or are operating on a delay....keep checking with News 14 Carolina on television for the latest on that.

Temps have plummeted this morning, and as I am typing this, temps are in the teens in Charlotte, Gastonia, Shelby, and Mt. Airy among other spots. Wind chill values will be in the single digits at times this morning. Up in the mountains, temps are below zero in the higher locations with wind chills approaching -20.

It will be very cold today with highs struggling to make it into the low to mid 30s. Look for teens everywhere tonight, and again, only 30s tomorrow. However, a nice warm-up moves in for the weekend.

Just a dusting in West Meck Jeff. There's a bubble around the airport and I'm too close. Gotta move to the University area....or Raleigh I guess.
