We had a great time up in the mountains yesterday. We made it to The Blowing Rock and then went down the Blue Ridge Parkway to Grandfather Mountain. There was still some very nice color to see, but we were up there right as the cold front was coming through. Unfortunately, that meant a lot of clouds, and the colors did not look as vibrant as they otherwise would have with full sunshine. It was also very breezy as the cold front came through....the summit of Grandfather Mountain was closed due to winds.

We really did have a great time. The kids love going up to the mountains, and so do I!

Around here, chilly air has pushed back in, and it is going to be here for a while. Tonight, good frost chances will again be with us with lows well down into the 30s.

Our next system will roll in Friday. This will be a classic cold air damming set up with a retreating high pressure leaving New England and a low pressure moving from the Gulf coast up to the eastern Carolinas. If this were December or January, we would be speculating about how much ice or snow we would be seeing. However, only rain this time around in the Piedmont. And I think we will see some very good rain amounts as well.

And, I still like the chances of a big push of cold air next week....probably arriving here around Tuesday. Looks like we will have the chance for a widespread freeze by Wednesday morning. Stay tuned....

Matthew, how about a contest for viewers to guess the first measurable snow at RDU, CLT, and GSO? Up in DC, WRC's Bob Ryan has a famous "Golden Shovel" contest wherein viewers try to guess the first 1" snowfall at DCA. It garners a lot of buzz.

widespread freeze? just wondering, when is the average first freeze for the charlotte area?

Haha.....that is not a bad idea. Let me see what I can do with that...

Funny you should ask about the first freeze....I showed that map on today's video. For the city of Charlotte itself, the average is the first week of November. See the video for the state map....

Strange signs of winter here lately. i dont know how much truth is in all those weather lores. but i will say, i remember always seeing black birds swarming arounf halloween time. theyre gone...already. seems like they migrated a bit early. only birds i can find now are a couple of blue jays that fly around the house. ive seen where alot of other people have also noticed the same thing this year. wonder if that is a sign of a cold winter. alos, alot of squirrels gathering loads of nuts. like i said, i dont know how much truth is in all those weather lores, but it sure is interesting. this season so far seems different than most. and the cold air doesnt seem like ts having any trouble getting here this season. we also seem to be right in the path for those storms coming up from the gulf, unlike last year when virtually nothing was going on down this way. i remember somewhat of a wedge setting up back in july or august of this year too, which if i recall correctly, everyone is commenting on how that was rare for the summer months. of course, we all know nobody can predict with 100% accuracy exactly what is going to happen this winter. these are just some of the things ive noticed so far. if there is any truth in weather lores, and the cooler than average weather continues along with the storms coming up from the gulf, id say we may just have a cold and snowy winter here in nc. we are due for a good snow. past few years have been lacking a bit, but so far things seem to be headed in the direction of a snow lovers best bet. of course, this is just my opinion. none the less, great fishing weather out there today lol. thanks for everything you guys do at news14. this is the only station where you can actually talk with the meteorologists, and the only station that truly throws out all the possibilities that could happen. cross your fingers for some snow this year. thanks
