Severe Weather Threat Today

>> Sunday, April 15, 2018

A warm and soupy airmass is in place ahead of a dynamic storm system approaching the region. Today's setup, as with most severe weather setups, is complex and constantly changing.

At mid-morning, an area of low pressure was developing in central and southern Georgia, and that low will lift NNE into the Carolinas this afternoon. As that low develops, the wind fields with this system will increase.

An intense line of storms will develop as the day progresses, and that line will then work eastward through the Carolinas this afternoon and toward the coast tonight. Ahead of that line, some individual storms could also develop.

There is enough wind energy with this system that a few tornadoes could form, either embedded within the line that will develop or associated with any of the storms that mange to fire ahead of the line.

Damaging winds will likely be the most significant threat, but some sizable hail is also possible.

Any portion of the mountains, foothills, and piedmont has the potential for severe weather, but the greatest threat may wind up being from roughly I-77 and points eastward.
