Late-morning....

>> Monday, January 10, 2011

Just finished hours of live television hits, so the mind is a bit mushy at the moment.

For the Triad and Triangle folks, this has been painful to watch, but not really unexpected. The air was extremely dry, and it takes a while to moisten that up. All along, you knew amounts would generally taper off as you went farther north and east. There appears to be a boundary aloft near the NC/SC line, and heavier precip has had a really tough time making it north of that.

With all of that said, the short-term models are adamant that the best lift (and therefore best snow chances) will not roll into central NC until this afternoon. So, I will let the accumulation map ride (what's the point in changing now anyway) and see how it pans out. As I mentioned in the comment section, the largest bust potential is probably in the northern foothills, but I would not completely throw the towel in yet. Let's let the system play out, and then we will see how good or bad everything went.

I am very happy for the folks in the Upstate and into the Charlotte metro that have done well thus far with this system. That area has received the short end of the stick seemingly countless times over the past few seasons, so I am happy those folks got a good snow.

All right, for those that are seeing the precip they want....congrats! For those that wind up short-changed.....we will try again next time.

What a fun winter season this has been thus far!

Hi Matthew-

Thanks for the updates that you provide on here and on American Forums. I appreciate it.

I have just over 2 inches at my house. It has been snowing solidly since before 5 AM (when I woke up), but it has been very light at times.

When you reference the northern foothills, to which counties are you referring? Hickory is sometimes called foothills and sometimes piedmont depending on the person talking.

Thanks again!

Sure thing!

I would definitely consider HKY in the foothills. When I refer to 'northern foothills' I normally am referring more to Surry, Wilkes, Yadkin etc moreso than Catawba.

But you too are definitely in the bust potential area. Interesting system....

Radar filling in again back to the west. Maybe storm will finally overcome the dry air in Winston. NWS has been saying all along snow would not begin much here until after 1. Let's see. No towel throwing yet folks. Let's see what happens by later afternoo. Still alot of energy to work with here;.

Thanks for the quick response! There's a little band forming over Caldwell County at the moment (where I actually live, just NW of Hickory). Maybe this will continue to develop and strengthen.

Seeing a few flakes fall here in downtown Raleigh. Henry from Accuweather just posted a new map that looks more robust than his previous one. It has both the Triangle and the Triad in the 3-6" range. I have a hard time believing that once this system hits the Atlantic it wouldnt fill in nicely back into C. NC. I am just hoping temps cooperate. It is 32F here in Raleigh but winds still out of the NNE.

So Matt this system not over yet? what is going on? Chris except the dry air

This is a day that will live in weather infamy for most of the Triad.

We are literally in a snow hole! There is snow all around us if you count the VA snow from this past weekend. Satellite images will be awkward tomorrow as a giant show hole exist only in the piedmont of NC!

Matt, are we going to get anything tonight? How would that happen as it looks like the radar is drying up?

Corinne 3:14 PM

Folks, just wait! The snow is moving in as I type. We're waiting on that second low to build in from the east... we knew we wouldn't get a direct hit from the first big low that hit Atlanta, but this is the second one building in... :) Snow's just churning down right now.

and just like that....the snow is ending again! Just wasn't meant to be this time. I guess someone's got to get ripped off to get snow and it's good to see the Charlotte folks finally getting some snow. I know they are tired of wathcing Winston Salem get it! Too bad winter appears to be over after this. But hey, what more can we ask for?? WE GOT A WHITE CHRISTMAS!!! The giant squid of winter rarities for the south!

@Chuck - Winter is far from over my friend.

Anonymous 4:31 PM

Matt, do you see any more winter systems in the long range?

Chris Enloe 4:47 PM

Looking like there could be something around the 19th...
