Some pretty big storms rolled into the region last night, and a number of warnings were required. Several reports of 1" hail came in, and a few wind damage reports were received as well.

Below is a radar image from this morning....

The complex of showers and storms over Illinois and Indiana this morning will move southeast and into the Carolinas late today and this evening. This is going to be one of those convective complexes that will likely impact a lot of places.

Severe weather is a likelihood for parts of the region as the convective complex rolls through. The main threats will be damaging winds and large hail, but I can't rule out a brief tornado or two. Of course, some locally heavy rain and vivid lightning is also possible.

Above is the Day 2 (Saturday) convective outlook from the SPC.

I am out of the weather office until Tuesday morning, but a quick post on the shower and storm potential tomorrow.

Below is a panel from the 6z GFS and 0z European....both in pretty good agreement showing the good chance of showers and storms tomorrow afternoon and evening. There will be enough instability and dynamics around for the chance of strong and severe storms. Hail and winds will be the main threats, but an isolated tornado or two is also possible.

Wonderful weather....

It was a frosty start to our Wednesday with Piedmont lows well down into the 30s...even dipping below freezing in some spots. However, temps will rebound into the 60s today and 70s tomorrow under a sunny sky.

In today's edition of the video, I take one more look back at the storm report map from Monday and Monday night, and look ahead at the weekend and our next couple of shower and storm chances.

A few radar images from this morning....

First, a reflectivity and velocity image from the storm that prompted the tornado warning in NE Davidson and Guilford counties. This is a 'comma head' signature....often times associated with brief tornadoes.

And here is an image as the storms were blowing into Cabarrus county....a wind gust of over 90mph was reported with this storm.

Cleaning up....

What a rough night. Almost every square inch of the region went under a severe thunderstorms warning last night, and a couple of tornado warnings were issued. Tons of wind damage reports have come in, and a lot of trees have unfortunately fallen on homes and automobiles.

Here is today's edition of the video....I recap the severe weather event and look ahead....

Severe weather...

>> Monday, April 04, 2011

Already this morning, severe watch boxes are in effect as what will be an active severe weather day and night is beginning. To the left is the watch summary as of 8:40am.

Ahead of the system, a warm and breezy day is unfolding for the Carolinas with many highs in the low to mid 80s...winds gusting to 30-40mph at times.

An intense line of rain and storms will continue to develop through the Lower Mississippi Valley, Tennessee Valley, and Ohio Valley as the day unfolds. That line will likely race into the mountains later this evening and begin to spill into the Piedmont soon after midnight.

The dynamics with this system are impressive, but instability is not. However, with the set up we will have in place, it will be very easy for any storm to tap those strong winds aloft and bring them down to the surface. So, I think we will have some issues in some areas with damaging winds, and a brief tornado or two is possible too.

All in all, this would be a good night to have your NOAA weather radio in the alert position.....
