Looking like mainly rain....but some wet snow possible on the back end

>> Monday, January 24, 2011

Here is today's edition of the Carolina Weather Video. Lots of time focusing on our next system....give it a look.

First off....a little light snow is making its way through the region this morning. It was even enough to whiten the ground in a few spots.

Highs will be in the 40s today and tomorrow....even a few lower 50s possible in a few places tomorrow, which leads us to....

Our next system...

The low pressure area will generally take a favorable track for interior Carolina snows. However, it looks like for a good portion of the storm (outside of the mountains), the lowest 3000 to 5000 feet of the atmosphere will be a little too warm for snow.

So, I anticipate rain developing in tomorrow afternoon (could be a bit of sleet mixed in very briefly due to some dry air aloft), and the rain will continue at times tomorrow night into Wednesday morning. But, there is still some snow potential with the system....see below.

Cold core upper air low....weatherman's woe....

A cold core upper air low will trail just behind and northwest of the main surface low. One of the main features of an upper air low is very cold air aloft. Time and time again, I have seen these systems put down snow, even when not even remotely foretasted to do so by modeling.

So, I think the potential for a period of wet snow is still very much there from north and central Mississippi, north Alabama, parts of Tennessee, northeast Georgia, the Upstate of South Carolina, then into the foothills and Piedmont of North Carolina.

For North Carolina, the best chance for this period of wet snow will be Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday evening.

You really have to watch those upper level lows for surprises. It is quite possible that some areas within the corridor I described above could see a period of heavy snow with multiple inch per hour accumulation rates, but that would be in a limited area, and could be anywhere along the track of the low.

But that snow potential is entirely dependent on dynamic cooling....in other words, cold air brought down from aloft due to heavy precip. This snow potential is tied directly to the upper air low track, and it is a deal where if you are just north or just south of the track, you wind up with some rain while spots right under it get snow.

At any rate, that's the basic idea. Some good rains look possible from later tomorrow into Wednesday morning, then we will see how the potential for some back side snow works out for somebody in the region.

Booo no snow told you it was time for a pity party and that's exactly what this is a hoax...jb

Winter is nowhere near over guys...

Anonymous 7:07 AM

Tyler I don't see why it ain't over don't look like anymore snow for us if this one ain't working out such a hoax

Anonymous 7:32 AM

Thanks Matt!
Im sure these are tough to call. I remember the March storm and models said we may get an inch in the back side and we ended up with a foot here in kings mountain after some thunder snow..... Hoping it happens again!

Well longer term equals no more snow winter is officialy over I don't care if its cold or not but if there's no snow winters over bring on spring maybe we will get severe weather since we can't get no more snow...this ain't working out so why is the rest that comes gonna work out lets go spring winter is officially dead

I get the frustration....but just because 1 system isn't working out the best for snow fans, no other ones do? Every county in NC has seen snow multiple times this winter (I believe), and it is only January 24. And we were able to do that with the overall pattern not being the best to this point.

I don't know if we will see more snow as we get in February or not, but I certainly think it is a possibility.

Also, I am not sure what you mean by a hoax?

Why do yall get so upset? If you want snow and don't get enough, just buy a snowmaker. That's what I did. I had over 16" in my yard in December and laid down 7" on Saturday. I have snow all winter, it's not a big deal. Thanks Matt for all your work. We really do appreciate it.

A hoax being the models showing a whoopper snow for us and than all of a sudden a change

Everyone just calm down :) I'll say it again... We had the "white whale" of snows this year...A White Christmas!!! Can we really ask for more than that? I've seen plenty of winters with barely a flurry. Let's all be thankful for what we've gotten and give Matt a break. He does a wonderful job! Matt, thank you for the videos. It's a great way to start my day. I think we'll still squeeze one more snow out before the year is done. Fresh cold looks to be on tap next week. And don't look now, but take a look at the strat warming event getting read to happen. That usually leads to cold in a couple of weeks as well. Thanks again!

Wow. A hoax? Seriously?

We live in North Carolina, not Minnesota. The unhappy people need to realize there are winters where we barely see any snow, if at all. The weather models are not an exact science. Snow was never a sure thing with this system.

Anyway, thanks for the forecast Matthew! Hopefully this rain will help ease the drought some.

Well Matt, so it goes. I wasn't really impressed with this situation in the first place. We were seriously teetering on the edge the whole time with temps. Thanks for keeping your thoughts coming though. Perhaps you can update us on the long range into early February. I think I heard some discussion about a block trying to re-establish itself the first week of February with a potential threat around the same time. It seems like with the winters we're having now, the chances are here throughout the winter.

I definitely would not give up on the ULL yet...that will put down a good bit of snow for somebody in the Southeast.

Hey Matt,
Is the EURO 0z run showing another coastal low popping this weekend? It shows a low but I don't know if it is close enough for precip. And the long range indicates bitter cold air guys, so dont give up!

Matthew East 9:53 AM

Is spits out VERY light precip later Friday in parts of the region...less than 0.05"

Matt
I keep reading on some blogs that the Nam keeps showing a decent snow on the back end of this storm for parts of western and central nc... Do you see this at all?

Anonymous 10:16 AM

Matt the latest NAM showing a very heavy snow event for us lasting into Thursday do you believe this? I'm starting to think the Nam is on to something...Chris

Anonymous 10:20 AM

Failed to mention that this is the 3rd consecutive run in a run of it showing this as well..

Anonymous 11:49 AM

By the way All....this is the 11th anniversary of the Blizzard of Jan. 2000 where a coastal low wound up and dumped 20.03 inches of snow on RDU in 14 hours!! I was in GSO at the time and remember seeing snow rates of 2-3 inches per hour. That was fun to watch!! Don't get excited. Cold air was firmly in place with that one, unlike this time... Chuck

Wow, major weenie alert by the first couple of Anons on this. I kinda hope yall don't get anymore snow. For the rest of us, we could use the rain, and who knows, we might get another system before its over. I've seen two good snows already, so anymore is just gravy. Hopefully next system will keep the crybabies at home. Thanks Matthew for all you do.

Tyler Legg 1:57 PM

Yep. Sad that folks think CLT is done with snow...
