Scattered storms possible today... big severe weather threat in the Plains...

>> Wednesday, April 17, 2013

An overnight complex of storms made it into the mountains and then decayed as it tried to move into the foothills and piedmont this morning. However, that complex has put down a boundary that will likely aid in the development of some scattered showers and storms in the region later today and into this evening.

In the meantime, a big severe weather threat will unfold in parts of the Plains states...especially Oklahoma and surrounding areas. That significant severe weather threat will then spread into the Mississippi Valley region tomorrow. See the video for much more on this.

That system will roll into the Carolinas Friday and bring a round of rain and storms. A few storms could be severe, but the threat does not look as significant as it is in locations to our west.

Much cooler air will follow that system for the weekend. Look for 60s for highs, and that will likely continue into early next week.

Warmer weather...

>> Tuesday, April 16, 2013

Here's today's video:

Warmer weather is returning to the region.... highs today well into the 70s and highs topping 80 in many spots tomorrow and Thursday.

A big-time Spring storm system will gear up in the Plains tomorrow. A significant risk of severe weather exists for Oklahoma and surrounding areas by later tomorrow, and that threat then shifts eastward Thursday.

The system will roll into the Carolinas Friday and bring a round of showers and storms. The dynamics will be pulling away to the north, and instability will probably be fairly limited. However, the severe weather potential needs to be watched.

Much cooler air flows in here for the weekend with lots of 60s for highs. Some 30s still looks possible for lows in some areas by Sunday and Monday morning.

This is the 2 year anniversary of the big April 16 tornado outbreak. 30 confirmed tornadoes occurred in NC that day, and that is the record for a one-day total.

Storm system headed in...

>> Thursday, April 11, 2013

Here's today's video... give it a look:

The dynamic Spring storm system I have been discussing all week will finally move through the Carolinas over the next 24 hours. A band of rain and storms extends early this morning from the Great Lakes down to Texas and Louisiana. That is the band of precip right along the cold front, and that will move through the Carolinas tonight.

Out ahead of the main area of showers and storms, it appears scattered storms will fire this afternoon in eastern GA and SC and then lift northeast in parts of NC. This will be scattered, hit and miss type of activity, but those storms could be severe and pose a damaging wind and tornado threat.

The main round of rain and storms will then move through tonight, and some of those storms could be severe. Wind would be the main threat tonight, but isolated tornadic activity can't be ruled out either.

Quiet weather is then on tap for the weekend.

This is our first widespread severe weather potential in a while. Please review your severe weather safety plan, and make sure you have a reliable way of hearing severe weather warnings should they be required.

Keep us tuned in on News 14 Carolina for live weather information as necessary.
