Arctic air is here...

>> Tuesday, November 18, 2014

A frigid airmass has arrived in the region and highs across the foothills and piedmont today will only make it into the 30s. When you add in a still-gusty wind, our wind chill values will be in the 20s for much if not all of the afternoon. Up in the mountains, some morning temps are in the single digits, and even a couple of places have a sub-zero reading, such as atop Mt. Mitchell.

It will be quite cold tonight with many foothill and piedmont spots dropping into the 15-20 degree range for lows. Highs tomorrow will head into the low to mid 40s.

Thursday we will likely break 50, but temps will remain a bit below average even into Friday and Saturday. Our next storm system rolls in Sunday with a good round of rain, and maybe a few storms, looking likely.

Here's today's video:

Lots to discuss...

>> Monday, November 17, 2014

Lots to discuss this morning. An incoming storm system will bring rain at times today to the region, and some rumbles of thunder are even possible in some areas. Closer to the coast, a few strong to severe storms are possible. The temp forecast will be very challenging as warm air moving in from the southwest will battle an eroding wedge across the region. So, we could wind up with a huge temperature spread this afternoon from north to south around the region.

Arctic air plunges in here tonight, and foothill and piedmont lows will bottom out well down into the 20s. It will be breezy, and up in the mountains, wind chill values will dip below zero late tonight into tomorrow morning.

Across the piedmont, highs tomorrow will only be in the 30s, and then I expect many lows Wednesday morning to drop into the 16-20 degree range.

Temps will then slowly moderate with piedmont highs into the 50s for Thursday and Friday.

Please see today's video for much more:

The cold is here...

>> Friday, November 14, 2014

Piedmont highs today will only make it into the low to mid 40s across the region in spite of lots of sunshine. Winds will still be a bit gusty out of the northwest making it feel even colder.

A cold night is on tap. Lows will drop into the low to mid 20s in many piedmont spots, and I still think a couple of the normally colder spots could dip into the upper teens tomorrow morning. Saturday highs will again be chilly....40s for most in the piedmont.

Rain will arrive with our next system Sunday night and continue through Monday, and then we will get an even colder blast of air in here Tuesday through Thursday next week. Some piedmont highs might not make it out of the 30s Tuesday and/or Wednesday with many spots possibly making a run into the teens for lows by Wednesday morning.

One final mild day before the cold arrives...

>> Wednesday, November 12, 2014

Above is today's video with all of the details of our upcoming big pattern change.

Enjoy today....the cold is almost here. Highs today will top out around the lower 70s or so for many in the region (outside the mountains) under a mostly sunny sky. A cold front is working through the region today, but the actual cold air lags a bit behind the front. Thus, we are able to squeeze in one final mild day before the big pattern flip occurs.

Clouds will increase tonight, and then look for lots of clouds with much colder temps tomorrow. A little light rain is possible with our Thursday highs in the upper 40s to mid 50s.

Friday will feature lots of sun, but it will be cold with piedmont highs in the 40s. By Saturday morning, lows will likely head into the low to mid 20s in the foothills and piedmont around the area with highs Saturday again in the 40s. Some of the normally colder spots might even dip into the teens Saturday morning.

Our next storm system will arrive later Sunday and bring a round of rain, especially Sunday night and Monday. Following that system, and even colder blast of air is looking possible for Tuesday and Wednesday next week.

Bundle up!

Cold weather inbound.... some snow for some as well....

>> Thursday, October 30, 2014

The 80s we had earlier this week will soon become a distant memory. However, the weather today and tomorrow really looks just fine with highs in the 60s. Then an extremely intense upper level low will dive overhead Friday night into Saturday.

This feature will spread some rain into the piedmont Friday night. Up in the mountains, snow will quickly take over, and some of the favored NW-facing locations could easily wind up exceeding 3-6" before all is said and done.

For the piedmont, as temps aloft and at the surface cool, some snow could mix in with the rain at times late Friday night into Saturday morning. Ground temps are warm, so I doubt any accumulations occur, but don't be surprised to see some snowflakes in the air in some areas. Highs Saturday will only be in the 40s.

Sunday will be chilly, but it will feel much better with full sunshine and highs in the 50s. Morning lows Sunday and especially Monday morning could dip below freezing in many areas.

Temps will moderate next week with some spots possibly seeing 70 again by mid-week.

Please see the video for much more...

Big changes on our doorstep...

>> Wednesday, October 29, 2014

A cold front will work through the region today, and we will have the chance of some showers, mainly this afternoon lingering into this evening, as that frontal passage occurs. Lows tonight will then head into the 40s with a clearing trend settling in.

The weather tomorrow and Friday looks cool and quiet with a good bit of sun and highs in the 60s.

A potent piece of upper level energy will then dig into the region Friday night into Saturday and usher in a big-time shot of early November cold air. Due to the strength of the upper level energy, some precipitation is looking increasingly likely later Friday night into Saturday morning. The mountains are a near-certainty to see some snow out of this, and some snowflakes could mix in even out into the foothills and piedmont late Friday night into Saturday morning.

At this point, I am anticipating highs struggling to reach 50 Saturday with a stiff northwest wind in place. Sunday should see 50s for highs with a sunny sky overhead.

The morning low forecast is tricky, as it will largely depend on how the clouds and winds behave. I still think that many spots could see a frost or a light freeze Sunday and/ or Monday morning though.

Please see today's video for much more...

Sunny and warm today... big changes ahead...

>> Tuesday, October 28, 2014

Highs will head into the lower 80s in most spots this afternoon under a sunny sky. Enjoy!

A cold front will drop into the region tomorrow and bring a quick-hitting chance of showers tomorrow afternoon. Highs tomorrow should be in the 70s. Following that front, highs will back down into the 60s Thursday and Friday. The weather looks great with temps in the 50s for both the Panthers game Thursday evening and trick-or-treaters Friday evening.

Shot of cold air...

A big-time blast of cold air is on the way this weekend. Piedmont highs Saturday and Sunday will be in the 50s, and it's looking likely that a freeze will occur in many spots Sunday and maybe Monday morning. Temps will then slowly return to the 60s for highs by Monday and Tuesday.

The mountains will likely see the first snowflakes of the season Friday night. The European model really goes nuts with the upper level energy Saturday and closes off an upper air low around the region. This solution even generates a few snowflakes over the northern Piedmont. However, that scenario is likely overdone.

Please see the video for much more...

Great start to the work week... changes ahead...

>> Monday, October 27, 2014

After a fantastic weekend, more great weather is on the way today and tomorrow. Look for full sunshine both days with highs today in the upper 70s and lower 80s and low to mid 80s tomorrow.

A cold front will arrive Wednesday, and some scattered showers will likely accompany it Wednesday afternoon. Behind the front, Thursday and Friday will be cooler with highs in the 60s for many Piedmont spots. At this point, the weather looks cool and quiet for trick-or-treaters Friday evening with temps quickly dropping through the 50s.

A big blast of chilly air will arrive for the upcoming weekend. At this point, I am going with the idea of highs in the 50s Satuday and Sunday and a pretty good chance of a widespread frost (and possibly a light freeze) by Sunday morning.

Here are the details in today's video:

Cool and breezy weather will be the rule for a couple of days around the region. In fact, some mountain spots are even sub-freezing this morning.

Down in the southern Gulf of Mexico (the Bay of Campeche specifically), TD 9 has formed. This system should slowly move E across the Yucatan and into the western Caribbean Sea. The short-term prospects for this system are not good, however, I do find it interesting that some of the modeling leaves a piece of the system behind in the western Caribbean in an environment that eventually becomes more favorable for strengthening by early next week. MUCH cooler this weekend...

>> Friday, October 03, 2014

A cold front is approaching from the west, and as it nears, we will have the chance of scattered showers and a few storms today and this evening. The best thunderstorm potential looks to be late this afternoon and into this evening. Highs should top out in the upper 70s and lower 80s for most.

Much, much cooler air will then arrive for the weekend. Highs tomorrow will only be in the 60s for a good portion of the piedmont under a sunny sky. Some mountain spots will only have 40s for highs tomorrow, and when you add in a stiff west wind, it will have the feel of a winter day up that way.

Lows Saturday night will then head town into the 38-42 range for many in the piedmont by Sunday morning. Some mountain spots could even dip below freezing Sunday morning. Piedmont highs Sunday will again be in the 60s with a sunny sky overhead.

Highs will rebound into the 70s for next work week.

It's a very foggy start to our Tuesday out there with many visibilities dipping under 0.25 miles. However, that fog will erode by mid-morning, and we will have plenty of afternoon sun with highs close to 80 in many piedmont spots. I anticipate low to mid 80s for highs tomorrow and Thursday.

A sharp cold front then arrives late Friday. Look for good chances of some showers and a few storms later Friday afternoon and evening followed by much cooler weekend weather. Highs Saturday and Sunday will struggle to reach 70 in spite of a sunny sky, and I still am expecting widespread 40s for lows Sunday morning.

Here's this morning's video:

Once this system clear out, the mid-week period will feature good intervals of sun and many of our highs in the 80s.

A sharp cold front will then arrive Friday with showers and maybe a few thunderstorms across the region. Following that front, we will get the coolest air yet this young season with some widespread 40s looking likely for lows by Sunday morning.

Highs today and tomorrow will top out well into the 90s around the region, In fact, some places in SC could clip 100 today and tomorrow. A few isolated PM storms are possible both days, but the prospects of widespread rain today and tomorrow are low.

A back door cold front will drop in here Saturday and bring better chances of some showers and storms, and then a much cooler setup will arrive for Sunday-Tuesday with highs well down into the 80s across much of NC.

We are still watching our tropical wave which is approaching the Lesser Antilles this morning. Over the next few days, this wave will be interacting with some mountains areas through the Greater Antilles. However, this could slowly develop as it near the Bahamas thereafter.

Systems overall have had a tough time developing this season, so it is far from a certainty that this will develop. But we will watch it. Eventually, this will likely be off the East Coast next week. See the video for more.

Tomorrow and Friday then look quite hot around the region with highs in our viewing area in the low and mid 90s. Places such as Columbia and Charleston in South Carolina could make a run to around 100.

A front will then back in here from the northeast over the weekend and bring a little better chance of some showers and storms followed by cooler temps.

Another cloudy, cool, damp day today... great weather later this week...

>> Monday, August 11, 2014

The heavy rain potential never materialized over the weekend across much of the NC piedmont. However, many spots in Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina did see some significant rain totals. See the video for more.

It was indeed a cool weekend though for many in the region. I show you the weekend highs in the video as well.

Our weather setup remains essentially unchanged from what we had in place over the weekend. Look for a continued cloudy sky through the day with some rain at times. Highs will be in the mid to upper 70s for most.

We will warm up more tomorrow just ahead of an incoming cold front, and due to higher levels of instability, some thunderstorms look like a possibility.

Behind that incoming cold front, a much drier airmass will begin to settle in for Wednesday. Actually at this point, the forecast is looking extremely nice Wednesday on through the upcoming weekend.

Here's the video:

Wet weekend on the way...

>> Friday, August 08, 2014

A very slow-moving area of low pressure will continue to approach the region through the weekend. Some showers or storms are possible later today, but it appears the rain will really settle in from later tonight into the weekend.

The bottom line is we will have periods of rain, and maybe a few storms, throughout the weekend. Rain totals will add up, and anybody in the region is fair game to pick up 1-3" of rain with locally higher amounts. Some flooding issues could crop up in some areas, and that potential will need to be monitored throughout the weekend.

Monday could still be pretty wet for portions of the region, but a much drier setup will arrive toward the middle of next week.

For those regular viewers of my video, I apologize for the low number of videos this week. There have been a number of computer issues in the weather office to battle. Hopefully a regular schedule resumes next week.

Parts of the CLT metro have seen over 4" of rain over the past 24 hours, and many spots around the region as a whole have seen over an inch or two. The pattern will remain unsettled through the weekend with some showers and storms at times.

In the tropics, Tropical Storm Bertha has formed and will move through the Lesser Antilles over the next 24 hours. From there, a bend to the NW is likely, and Berth will likely be located a little east of the Bahamas early Monday morning as a tropical storm.

From there, a turn to the north and northeast is likely. I still can't rule out a threat to the East Coast, but odds are favoring an offshore track. Stay tuned.

Unsettled weather ahead...

>> Thursday, July 31, 2014

After enjoying a stretch of wonderful late July weather, a much more unsettled weather pattern lies ahead. A few showers and storms are possible today, but the chances of showers and storms really begin to ramp up tonight and tomorrow as an area of low pressure develops over Florida and Georgia.

Chance of showers and storms at times will remain high through the weekend. Some locations in the region could see multiple inches of rain over the next few days, but where those locations might be will depend on where the areas of rain and storms set up.

Much drier and cooler air continues to settle in behind a cold front in much of the region today. The result (for everybody from the Piedmont and points north and west) is a very pleasant weather setup for the next couple of days.

Highs in the 80s with lows humidity levels make for nice mid-July weather. Lows tonight will head into the lower 60s for many Piedmont spots...and some of the cooler spots could see upper 50s.

Showers and storms today/ tonight... pleasant airmass tomorrow...

>> Tuesday, July 15, 2014

Our much-discussed cold front will finally press into the region today. The result will be showers and storms at times, mainly this afternoon and then extending into portions of tonight.

There are more winds aloft in play with this front than you normally see in mid-July, so the result will be a heightened risk of damaging winds with the storms today. Please heed severe thunderstorm warnings as they are issued.

Following this front, a pleasant mid-July airmass will arrive with dewpoints dropping into the 50s for many in the region (maybe even upper 40s for some). Highs will be in the 80s tomorrow and Thursday, and that will spell nice weather for this time of year.

Here's the video with all of the details:

Scattered storms today...

>> Wednesday, July 09, 2014

A cold front is approaching from the northwest, and we will likely have a pretty good coverage of scattered showers and storms around the region this afternoon and evening. A few storms could produce damaging winds and large hail, and any storm is subject to produce lots of lightning.

Arthur to impact the NC coast tonight...

>> Thursday, July 03, 2014

After a very hot and extremely humid day yesterday, we are seeing a cold front move into the region today and give us the chance of some showers and storms at times. Highs today should top out in the mid to upper 80s to lower 90s.

Much drier air plunges in here starting tonight behind the cold front and Hurricane Arthur, and the result will be some spectacular holiday weekend weather.

ARTHUR

Arthur became a hurricane this morning and is churning off the South Carolina coast. Winds will be over tropical storm force at times along the South Carolina coast today, and then the winds will really ramp up along the southern NC coast later this afternoon and evening.

The center of Arthur will track near or likely over the Outer Banks tonight. For most of the coast, you can expect winds through the night to at least gust over hurricane force and many areas will likely see sustained hurricane force winds for a period of time.

I expect some significant flooding problems for some areas of Highway 12 in the Outer Banks. Driving southeast winds will increase through the day and into the evening, then as Arthur pulls away tomorrow morning, winds will become out of the northwest and west. So, both Atlantic and sound side flooding is likely for the Outer Banks. And I fully expect some sound flooding in some mainland areas as well.

Arthur to approach the Carolina coast...

>> Wednesday, July 02, 2014

It's a hot Wednesday forecast around the region with many highs surging up into the mid 90s. When you factor in the humidity, heat index values will exceed 100 in many spots this afternoon.

Scattered storms will fire this afternoon, and while they will indeed be scattered in nature, the storms that form could produce damaging wind, some hail, and lots of lightning.

Tomorrow still looks unsettled with good chances of showers and storms at times as Arthur nears the coast and a cold front moves in from the west.

Following the front and Arthur, fantastic holiday weekend weather is on tap with highs in the 80s, low humidity, and plenty of sun.

TROPICS

Tropical Storm Arthur continued to slowly strengthen overnight, and it stands a great chance of becoming a hurricane today or tonight. The strongest winds (probable tropical storm gusts) along the South Carolina coast will occur tomorrow afternoon.

It still appears Arthur will track very near or over the Outer Banks tomorrow night into early Friday morning. Tomorrow night will feature the roughest weather for the NC coast and Outer Banks.

Look for winds to hurricane strength at least in gusts for the Outer Banks, and sustained winds could very well make it to hurricane strength. Flooding along Highway 12 is likely, and roads and bridges could be closed as necessary. Please plan accordingly.

Tropical Depression One has formed...

>> Tuesday, July 01, 2014

Please see today's video, docked below, for all of the graphics to go along with this video.

Highs today will head into the low to mid 90s across the area. When you factor in the humidity, heat index values this afternoon will likely be between 96 and 99 degrees for many. A few isolated storms will likely fire, but they will be few and far between.

The storm chances increase a bit tomorrow with highs nearing the mid 90s, and then Thursday is looking unsettled with good shower and storm chances as an incoming front combines with our tropical system just offshore.

Behind all of that, our weather then looks great for the holiday weekend.

TROPICSTropical Depression One is located a little under 100 miles off of the Florida coast this morning and will make a turn to the north and then northeast over the next few days. The system should become a tropical storm today, and it might become a hurricane prior to reaching near the Outer Banks Thursday night.

The worst period of weather along the NC coast, especially the Outer Banks, will be late Thursday through Friday morning. Look for rainy, squally weather during that time period, but then conditions will be much improved from Friday afternoon through the rest of the holiday weekend.

Watching the tropics....

>> Monday, June 30, 2014

Highs today will head into the upper 80s in many spots under a partly sunny sky. A few afternoon storms will also develop and then fade away this evening.

Tomorrow looks pretty hot and mainly dry. Highs will head into the lower 90s for most.

Storm chances ramp up Wednesday and Thursday as a cold front approaches and we begin to see some impacts in the region from a potential tropical low.

TROPICSAn area of low pressure is currently located off of the Florida coast. It will meander around for a day or two and then begin to lift northeast, likely tracking somewhere near the Carolina coast Wednesday into Friday.

This could very well become our first classified tropical system of the Atlantic tropical season. If you have beach plans this week, I wouldn't change them at this point. Just stay tuned for updates.

Victory!

>> Wednesday, June 25, 2014

I am happy to report that I took the big first place trophy in the Media Mayhem School Bus Race out at Charlotte Motor Speedway yesterday evening! It's all part of the Summer Shootout Series each Tuesday night during the summer at the Speedway...great, affordable family events.

Such a great time. I really appreciate the great folks out at Charlotte Motor Speedway for having me and my crew out there once again.

By random draw, I started the race 7th out of 8 drivers, but was quickly able to work my way up to the front. Proud to say I passed everybody without any help from a field inversion or anything.

After having just about anything that could go wrong actually go wrong the past 3 years, this time, everything went right and I was able to win. So much fun.

Here's the paint job on the bus... thanks to the wife and kids for their artistic ability. I have none.

Here's me taking the checkered flag as well as me on the big video board doing the post race interview/ celebration.

And finally, if you are interested, here's my in-bus video for the race.

We miss you Heili

>> Monday, June 16, 2014

Over the weekend, my family lost our sweet Heili. It was a very difficult Sunday with lots of tears. My wife got Heili way back before we were even married, and she has been such a huge part of our life in the many years since then.

In the beginning of our marriage, it was just the three of us. In that immediate summer, our days consisted of taking Heili for walks and out to play in the fields around Mississippi State and then going out and playing intramural ball each weeknight (Heili was the mascot).

She was a very smart and sweet dog, and those were some really great times.

**that picture is her playing with bubbles**

The following spring we welcomed our first child into the world. Heili immediately fell in love with her and became her protector. Every person and family member required Heili's approval prior to holding Jayden from Day 1.

And she was just the same with all of the rest of our children as they came along through the years. In fact, Heili was always the first one (even before my wife and I) to know we were pregnant. She just knew, and she had a definitive way of letting us know. And she was oh so protective of them... you didn't mess with our kids around Heili.

And boy did they love her.

So many great memories swimming, playing in the snow, playing fetch, wrestling in the house.

Before all the seats at our table were filled with our family, Heili would often times seem to hop up into one of the empty chairs before the meal was over and patiently await any leftovers. If you brought a snack into the living room, Heili would sit perched in front of you and quietly whine to let you know she was ready for a snack as well.

Our youngest daughter, who is approaching 2, really seemed to have a special bond with Heili. They would sit together in the floor and just communicate with one another. They would talk and roll around. Penny loved getting kisses from Heili, and Heili loved giving them. Heili also knew that at dinner time, hanging out under Penny was the place to be...the most dropped food occurred there.

And watching Penny tell Heili 'bye Heili' yesterday was absolutely gut-wrenching. I'm so glad she got a goodnight kiss from her Saturday night.

In the beginning of a meteorologist's career, it can often involve lots of moving. I am thankful to have had more stability than many do in my career to this point, but due to finishing college and life circumstances, we lived in 5 different homes during the first several years of our marriage. Heili was our constant through all of those moves....always a part of our home (and for my wife, even before I was a part of her home!). Our home, though bustling with life and people, feels strangely empty at this point.

After the kids would go to bed, it would be my wife and I and Heili watching TV, normally snacking, Heili normally asking for hers too. Didn't feel like watching any TV last night.

As she got older, she slowed down a lot, but overall, her health was very good until a few weeks ago. Over the past 6 months or so, she had gotten pretty restless at night. I chalked it up to getting older and wanting to go out to the bathroom/ get water more, but in retrospect, I suppose that was the first sign of heart failure.

Her breathing got more labored in intervals a couple of weeks ago, movement was really becoming a struggle for her, and we took her to the vet last Monday. After a battery of tests, medicine was prescribed and we started that on Wednesday.

She seemed to actually get a little more alert and a little better by Friday and Saturday morning, and I guess I allowed myself to get hopeful for continued improvement. I wasn't expecting much, but I was hopeful she would improve enough to allow us to take her on one last car ride or one last trip to a lake or pond. She always loved water.

But Saturday evening, it was evident she had gotten much worse.

Sunday morning, our other, younger dog, woke me up a little before 6am. He never does this. I had hoped to get a little more sleep on this Father's Day morning, so at first I ignored him. But then the thought crossed my head 'what if he's telling me Heili is gone.' So I rolled over and checked, and that unfortunately was exactly the case.

I woke my wife up and told her, and we had a little time to process it together. It was actually a bit of a blessing yesterday morning that our kids woke up basically individually and spread 15-20 minutes apart. While that meant I had to deliver that awful news 5 times, it allowed each of the kids to have some time with us and Heili and come to terms with it one by one.

Yesterday morning was just absolutely filled with tears from all of us. We tried to begin to cope. We sat and talked and began to come to grips with it.

It was time to get ready to go to Sunday School and church, and the kids told her goodbye for the last time. Brutal. They went off to church, and then I had to get to the business of caring for Heili for the final time. I loaded her up in my car and we took our last car ride. It wasn't the last car ride I had hoped to take with her, but it was our last car ride nonetheless. I told her about the things we were seeing on the way and just stroked her neck as we drove. And I tell you.... leaving her there was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Eventually I figured out that it was never going to feel 'right' or complete, and I had to just turn and walk away at some point. And eventually I did. And that was it.

I'm sorry for laying so much of this out there. I just felt like I needed to type it out. I knew it was going to be difficult to say goodbye, I just didn't know it was going to be quite as hard as it is. And I am hopeful typing all of this out helps a bit.

But I am so thankful for all of the wonderful memories we have. I honestly can't imagine ever having a better dog. She was just the right dog for our family at the right times in our lives, and her absence is going to be very tough to fill. I am thankful that she didn't seem to struggle, and I am thankful we didn't have to make any really difficult end of life decisions.

And above all of that, I am thankful we all had Heili.

We miss you Heili....
