Quiet, chilly weather settles in...

Below is today's edition of the Carolina Weather Video...

After an active night with numerous severe thunderstorm and some tornado warnings issued across the region, a chilly, dry, and quiet airmass is arriving today.

Temperatures will not move a great deal through the day. In fact, the temps will begin to fall a bit in many spots later this afternoon, and lower 50s will be about the best we will do for daytime temps. It will be a bit breezy as this colder airmass arrives as well.

A cold night is on tap with lows well down into the 20s area-wide. Then tomorrow will only feature mid to upper 40s for highs around the Piedmont.

Friday will be cool and quite with highs in the lower 50s.

Weekend...

A clipper system will swing through this weekend. With this morning's forecast package, I have again left precip chances out of the forecast. However, I can't rule out a brief shower in a few spots at some point over the weekend. Highs will remain chilly....mainly in the mid to upper 40s.

Next week...

Most modeling is indicating the potential storm system next week will remain to our south, and most of our region will simply be cold and dry. I am not ready to rule out the possibility of a storm system, but the trend has not been the friend of snow fans over the past 24 hours.

It does look cold next week with some low to mid 40s for highs and lows well down into the 20s. In fact, if the idea of a suppressed system (meaning no precip here) does indeed occur, some teens are quite possible for a few Piedmont lows.

I really trust the Euro over GFS due to last year, but GFS has been really consistent. However, doesn't GFS usually trend North? Also, will the models handle the "event" better after this severe wx storm moves out?

I can't say that I am surprised. Charlotte really struggles to get winter events in December. I will keep a look for that "Gotcha" concept, but as Anon said, the GFS has been very consistent. I guess by the end of the weekend, we should have a good idea what will happen, thanks Matthew.

Yeah, no surprise here either. It's the old "cold and dry or warm and wet" label hanging its head in Charlotte again. It's literally going to be too cold to snow!! Peanut butter cold just doesn't mix with the moisture jelly here that much.

Weird that the models are showing that much push of cold air to suppress the storm. But yeah, given the choice of cold and dry or cool and wet, I'll take the cold to get me into winter. I hate cold rain!!

Models now beginning to allow the clipper to cross the mountains Sunday. I really think the GFS will trend a little more north.

Yeah, no I doubt it. To cold and dry.

Actually, the GFS has a tendency to strengthen troughs to fast. This happened several times last year. Bottom line.....we will have a better idea during the weekend.

12z CMC says a Miller A style track for the 7th and 8th, BUT still suppressed when it gets near Florida. It's the only model I've seen so far showing this. This may be the northward trend we are looking for. Regardless of that, we do not want to see this go too far north all the sudden on the other modeling and still be 6-7 days away.

DoubleJ 1:43 PM

Yeah, if the track goes too far North, we will be getting into some of that Cold Rain Brad was talking about that, and I don't like that either. I'd rather be Cold and dry.

Just speculation, but I think the upper low over New England MAY weaken slightly next week and allow a Miller A solution to happen. Of course that would put the heaviest snow in Eastern North Carolina, but close enough. Plus, in 2008-2009, Eastern Viewing area and ENC had a clipper like this weekend blow up offshore. We still have lots to wait and analyze from future model runs.

Like Matt just mentioned, that clipper system this weekend looks interesting. 18z NAM has a pretty good swath of snow (not too much, but enough to be of interest). Just goes to show that the models continue to pop up surprises. Keep hope alive snow fans. Early next week, while not looking too good right now, may be rejuvenated soon.

Thanks Flyfisher, honestly I haven't paid much attention to this clipper system, but maybe I should.
