Frigid stuff....

>> Monday, December 06, 2010

Cold is the weather word this week. Many Piedmont locations will see highs shy of 40 for the next few days, and many lows will dip down into the teens. This is pure arctic air.

No storm system until we get to next weekend. Models still look all over the place with the exact track of that one, so tough to have any confidence at this point.

I will be out of town this week, but my buddy Andy Wood, a meteorologist at Fox Carolina in Greenville-Spartanburg, is kind enough to provide some information here on the blog this week. Andy is a bright meteorologist, and if you have never read his stuff, I think you will enjoy what he has to say.

Everyone have a great week. Throw another log on the fire and stay warm!

Hey Guys!
What are your ideas for Christmas. GFS has been consistently showing a low pressure for us around the 22nd with wintry precip. Could we finally get a white Christmas? I know its far out and speculating, but what are your thoughts?

I think it's going to be cold up until Christmas. The issue is whether we can actually get a system to pass to our south so that we are on the cold side of the storm. Otherwise we'll be really cold and dry before we warm up a little in order to get a boring rainstorm.

There look to be three potential systems in the offing: this coming weekend, sometime around the 19th, and then the storm you're referring to on the 22nd. They could all be huge snowstorms, or they might be nothing but rain. It's still too early to speculate, but I like the cold weather pattern part of the forecast.

The GFS has went crazy for the week of Christmas, showing a more zonal flow and lots of rain. This is very discouraging and I hope the model is wrong.

It's not going to snow. Period. Not anytime soon at least. To warm.

Well.... I'm not ruling out the whole winter yet, but this is what you get now in Charlotte, cold/dry or warm and wet. I simply have to temper my expectations now it seems. It's funny because I don't remember winters this way when I was a kid. In the 80s/early 90s, it seemed like it snowed at least 2 times a year/measurable amounts. Now we haven't had a really major snow in Charlotte in about 7 years (I don't count last years 2.5 inch events; if it doesn't completely cover the grass, it's not a real event!!:)). Maybe it's global warming, I don't know.

Realistically I'm just going to start finding something else to do in the winter and if I want snow, I'll go visit blowing rock! No more GFS DAY 7-10 examinations!! If it snows, geat...it'll just be a wonderful surprise.
