Over hyped, as always. In Monroe we got maybe 2 inches, and it was quick. The local "winter storm" crews are quite fond of making dire predictions then pointing to one or two isolated spots to claim things worked out "just like predicted".
I recall seeing 4-8 inches on your colorful little radar, you can normally divide that number by at least 2 to get an actual idea of what to expect.
I understand that your boss requires the "hype", I am sure these events produce your highest ratings.
Once again we "dodged the bullet"...

we got 6 inches just like jeff and matt and everyone else were callin for, and besides we should be happy to get 1 in. this is NC not new york.

1st Anon....Dude, c'mon...that's pretty harsh...These kinds of storms are EXTREMELY hard to nail...I sincerley think News 14 did a great job..They worked their tails off to make sure everybody was safe and knew what was going on...Seriously...

To the 1st anon....

I think you're just cranky you were the person who didn't get much. Enjoy what you have, and we'll just enjoy ours more. :)

1st Anon- You got what you deserved. You might consider moving back up north, obviously you are too bitter down here. We got about 6 inches, so jokes on you, HA!! Matthew, good job, you guys did a good job on a real complex storm.

All, thanks so much for the kind words! I sincerely appreciate it.

All in all, not a terrible job forecasting this one. You are never going to hit every site's accumulation forecast, especially when I put out an accumulation forecast for the Charlotte, Triad, and Triangle regions.

To the first poster, here is an exact quote from the initial accumulation outlook I put out.

"Below this is my accumulation outline. The area inside the blue line, I am going with a general 3-7" snow with isolated higher or lower amounts."

Seems like you were one of the isolated lower amounts, but that forecast worked out just fine for Meck, Iredell, Cabarrus, Gaston, etc...

I also mentioned a strip where 6-10" would be possible. That did indeed develop, just about 50 miles west of the initial outline I drew SATURDAY morning (9" in Kings Mountain, 7" in Surry County). I even mentioned in the video that the band could wind up setting up 50 or 100 miles either way....that it was impossible to precisely pin down where it would be in advance.

I can't speak for anyone else, but if I were simply trying to justify a 3-7" forecast by listing accumulation amounts, why would I include the 1" report from Wadesboro?

By and large, I think the actual accumulations were right in line with my 3-7" idea.

One final comment, I can assure you that my boss's only requirement of me is that I put out the most accurate forecast possible. While we do pull very high ratings during breaking weather events, how long will that last if we purposely overstate the nature of events? You can rest assured that none of the meteorologists at News 14 Carolina have any other interest in forecasting aside from being as correct as possible.

Trust me, I understand disappointment over snow. The 5" we received at our house this morning is more than all of the snow events we have received since we moved into this house 3.5 years ago....combined.

No school in Cleveland County!!!

3inches near colony place in south east Charlotte.I have a question Matt.i am wondering if the reason that south east south Charlotte and area east of Charlotte did not get as much Snow as north and west Charlotte was because the area that got not much as snow was because of all the Heavy of this Rain that we snow that kept snowfall accumulation down. Also why did during this the Heavy Snow did Temps not go down? blow 32?.This Strom was Ok 1 to 10 I give it 5 It would have been for sure like 04 had We did not see so much Heavy rain and had temps been in the upper 20 and not at 33 to 34

Firt guy,

Do not complain. There is nothing to complain about, you got snow. They said they generally expect 4-8 for everyone, with some higher and lower amounts possible. Maybe if you payed attention to what was said, instead of hearing or reading what you want to, you would have known that. there is no excuse for that. They did not hype this storm at all. You want to see hype...turn your TV to WSOC or WCNC and watch them, that is hype where they did the "its gonna snow and we're gonna die" stuff at. Every time they talked about this snow storm, they said it could all change at any time, taking the hype out of it. Also, they do not forecast for your specific area, they we're forecasting for the entire viewing region, not just Monroe. Their forecast was just like predicted, a general 4-8 in with some higher and lower amounts. Don't complain about it and enjoy the snow that you did get. Meterology isnt an easy job, its actually one of the more difficult ones, so cut Matthew some slack.

In terms of what i think, you did great Matthew. You, and every one else at News 14. News 14 and yours and jeffs blog is where i will head whenever winter weather approaches.
