Brutal air moves in tomorrow...

>> Wednesday, January 14, 2009

Above is today's edition of the Carolina Weather Video. Give it a look...pictures are worth a thousand words.

Today will be chilly, but it will feel downright warm compared to what is coming. Highs today will be in the low to mid 40s, and we might not be that warm again until the middle of next week.

The arctic air will surge in there tomorrow. Highs will likely be in the mid 30s at best in much of the Piedmont. It will be blustery, and wind chill values will be in the 20s all day.

Temps will plummet tomorrow night and most will be in the mid teens by Friday morning. Highs Friday will not make it out of the 20s, and then lows will probably be a few ticks colder Saturday morning than Friday morning. Saturday morning is when the best chance of seeing some single digits will occur.

As I mentioned in the video, I think the GFS is lost when it comes to Sunday and Monday. The European is likely much more correct than what the GFS has been showing.

So, I continue to mention a chance of some light snow Sunday and possibly Monday as well. If the Euro is correct, some accumulating snow would likely occur in the Carolinas, but I have no confidence in any of the specifics right now. Who knows, the GFS could score a coup, but I doubt it.

It would be nice if we could get a clipper to come thru like we had back in 2003. If memory serves me correctly we had a few inches of snow on a couple different occassions then.

I guess I am grabbing at any hope to get a decent snow.

LOL

Gerald, there are actually a few similarities with this system and the January 2003 event, synoptically speaking. There were some very small scale things that occurred in Jan 2003 that made that such a great event, and it is impossible to tell if anything like that might happen this time.

I kind of forgot was that clipper back in 2003 was that the one who drop 6 inches of snow in charlotte?

Let's just wait and see about the snow event later this week - early next week. Eventually time will tell, and it would be good to see accumulating snow.

Still can't buy into snow in Charlotte out of a clipper. Maybe flurries, a few pretty flakes but not anything measurable. Until we get coastal lows out of the gulf to our south, it's not happening, IMO.

Well, poopeedoopee, Matthew! Been awhile since I last checked in with your site, much less tried to leave a comment. I hope that what I have to say will be just the least little bit hopeful.

We were supposed to have a hard freeze here last night. (And you remember that I'm down here in Houston, right?) Well, we had a freeze, but then the sun appeared and we warmed up very nicely! (Nothing to 'write home about', but - compared to what it might have been and what the fear-mongers were predicting - the temp probably got up into the mid-40's, maybe even 50's.) I sure hope the same sort of thing might occur your way. Trying to send some of my 'warm' thoughts in a northeasterly direction! :)

Matt,
Hey. Just thought i would mention that this mornings low here in Lawndale was 18 degrees when i left my house. Also, whats the chance for us here getting accumulating snow Sunday night into Monday?
Thanks

Yeah, January 2003 was a clipper...dropped a foot of snow in the foothills. However, that was a different type of system overall...had a lot of small scale things working for it.

Goldenrod...good to hear from you. Actually, I enjoy the cold weather....fresh load of firewood coming in today, so we should be good to go!

Junior....cold morning! I think the overall chances of accumulating snow Sunday or Monday are pretty low, but not zero. System will really struggle for moisture.
