Heat rolls on...

>> Thursday, June 05, 2008

Oppressive heat rolls on here in the Carolinas. Highs today are well up into the 90s and highs will remain in the mid to upper 90s (even touching 100 in spots) right through the weekend and into early next work week.

Here are a few selected high temps from today:
Greensboro: 95
RDU Airport: 96
Charlotte: 95
Asheville: 90
Concord: 100
Rockingham: 99

You need to take frequent breaks in the air conditioning if you have to spend any extended period of time outside. Also drink plenty of fluids, especially water. Check on those that do not have access to air conditioning, and remember those pets need plenty of shade and nice cold water.

Air quality levels are not very good at all, so factoring that with the heat, this is a good weekend to spend time inside if at all possible.

While we are baking in the heat wave, on the periphery of this big upper air ridge, round after round of severe weather continues to occur in the High Plains. A 'high' risk of severe weather is out for portions of the Plains this afternoon and evening.

>> Tuesday, June 03, 2008

Be on the lookout this afternoon for some scattered showers and storms. This is not a foregone conclusion, but it looks like the necessary ingredients will be in place for some storms to fire off in the heating of the day. Any storms that do form could be severe with some damaging winds and large hail. Keep it tuned to News 14 Carolina for all of the latest weather information....

Sunday evening...

>> Sunday, June 01, 2008

We had an isolated severe storm develop in western Union County this afternoon and track all of the way across the southern portion of the county. The storm weakening as it moved into Anson County. That storm produced some dime-sized hail as well as some gusty winds. Almost 500 cloud to ground lightning strikes also occurred.

A few more isolated showers or storms remain possible this evening as a frontal boundary drops through. Some drier air will settle in behind the front, and that should mean no rain chances Monday or Tuesday.

The heat and humidity return Wednesday and continue into the weekend. Look for highs in the lower 90s and the chance of a few afternoon showers or storms.
