Minor bout with snow still possible

>> Thursday, December 07, 2017

A frontal boundary remains stalled out just off the Carolina coast and extending down into the northern Gulf of Mexico. Along that front, an area of low pressure continues to develop in the northwestern Gulf, and extensive precipitation extended from Texas into portions of Louisiana, southern Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and the eastern Carolinas early Thursday.
As that low develops and moves to a position off of the Carolina coast by early Saturday, that shield of precipitation will pivot back to the northwest. For the piedmont and foothill zones of North Carolina, look for the potential for a mixture of rain and snow to arrive late tonight into Friday morning, and then as we get deeper into Friday and Friday evening, snow could become the primary precipitation type in many locations north and west of a Monroe to Durham line. The precipitation will then taper off late Friday night into Saturday morning.
This should be a pretty minor event. However, there is the chance for some small snow accumulations, mainly on grassy and elevated surfaces. Some areas will not have any snow accumulation at all. Ground temperatures will be warm, air temperatures will remain a bit above freezing for most of the event, and rain could remain mixed in with the snow. But some spots will likely have the ground whitened with a dusting to a slushy inch of snow, again, mainly on elevated surfaces. It is possible a few isolated locations pick up slightly more than that.
Cold air will take over for the weekend with highs struggle to make it out of the 30s Sunday. Another shot of cold air is still due in here for the middle of next week as well.
Please see today's video for tons more information.

Cold is here.... what about snow chances?

>> Wednesday, December 06, 2017

Our much-talked about pattern change has occurred, and we will have lots of below average temperatures right on through next week. Highs will only be in the upper 40s Thursday, and then highs could struggle to reach 40 Friday and Sunday. Another shot of cold air arrives next week, primarily focused around late Tuesday through Thursday. That blast of cold air looks even colder than what will settle in for the weekend.
You have likely heard folks discussing the prospects of snow in the Carolinas. Here's the deal. A frontal boundary will remain draped just offshore through Saturday. Occasional waves of low pressure will ride along that front and try to throw areas of precipitation northwestward into the interior Carolinas at times. For our area, I expect most of that precipitation to remain south and east of the piedmont through Thursday, but on Thursday night, Friday, and Friday night, the next wave of low pressure could be strong enough to throw that precip up our way.
As the cold air continues to deepen over the Carolinas, precipitation that falls from Thursday night through Friday night could fall in the form of snow, at least at times. At this point, I favor the idea of only minor snow accumulation potential due to initially warm ground conditions and likely fairly light precipitation rates. In fact, it is possible the bulk of the precipitation remains suppressed to the south. However, there are some models that are stronger with the system and heavier with the precipitation, so we will keep an eye on it.
Please check out today's edition of the video. A picture is with a thousand words.

Holiday weekend weather

>> Wednesday, November 22, 2017

We have arrived at what is typically the busiest travel day of the year, and most of the Lower 48 is facing pretty good weather overall. The Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, and Tennessee Valley are having relatively cool weather today, while the western and southwestern US is generally mild.

Some rain and interior Northeast snow is moving through the Northeast through the first half of today, and the Pacific Northwest will continue to have a couple of storm systems to deal with today and through the weekend. Aside from those areas, Florida will have rain at times Thanksgiving into Friday, and the coastal Carolinas could pick up a little of that rain later Friday. Most of the Lower 48 is in good shape.

For our area, nice weather has settled back in with highs in the upper 50s today with plenty of sun. Look for lower 50s for Thanksgiving, upper 50s Friday, lower 60s Saturday, and then cooler again Sunday and Monday.

The forecast looks dry for our area for the next week or so.

Be sure and check out today's video for lots of information.

Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving!

Chilly for the weekend

>> Thursday, November 09, 2017

Wednesday was a very chilly, wet, raw day around the region with temperatures hovering in the 40s and drizzle at times. For our Thursday, morning rain will give way to an overcast and chilly afternoon with highs in the 48-51 degree range for most.
A strong cold front will then move through Friday morning, and following it, the coldest air we have had since March will arrive. After Friday highs top out in the 50s, look for lows Saturday morning well down into the 20s. Sunshine will be on full display Saturday, but highs will only manage to make it into the mid and upper 40s. Another freeze is then likely Saturday night into Sunday morning.
Temperatures will gradually creep back up to near the mid-November averages next work week.

Coldest air since March takes hold

>> Wednesday, November 08, 2017

A strong wedge is in play around the region for our Wednesday. The result is light rain at times, clouds, and quite chilly temperatures. In fact, I expect our Wednesday highs to only be in the 40s for much of the area.

The wedge will be slow to erode Thursday, so clouds will linger even after some morning rain departs, and highs will struggle to hit 50.

An arctic cold front will then blow through the region Friday. Blustery northwest winds will kick into gear, and the coldest airmass since March will then take hold Friday night into the weekend. A widespread significant freeze is likely by Saturday morning with lows in the 20s. In spite of full sunshine Saturday, highs will only be in the 40s.

Huge changes

>> Tuesday, November 07, 2017

A big-time weather change is underway around the region. A cold front is making its way through the Carolinas today, and as that occurs, some showers will remain possible from time to time. A few rumbles of thunder are also possible, but I do no anticipate any severe weather issues.

Temperatures will hold steady for a large portion of the day and then begin to fall later this afternoon. Overnight, a wedge will set up shop with overnight temperatures in the 40s.

A very chilly, damp day is on tap Wednesday. Look for clouds, some light rain and drizzle, and piedmont temperatures struggling to even make it out of the 40s.

Thursday and Friday will be a touch milder, but still below average, in the high temp department. But then, get ready for the coldest air thus far this season Friday night into the weekend.

I expect many lows Saturday morning to dip into the 20s in the piedmont. Saturday will feature full sun, but in spite of that, highs will struggle to hit 50 or so in many areas. Another sub-freezing morning is then on the way Sunday morning.

Bundle up!

Changes for the weekend

>> Friday, November 03, 2017

Friday will be another very warm early November day across the region with piedmont highs in the upper 70s  to lower 80s and mountain highs well into the 60s. However, a cold front is approaching, and that front will quickly slide through the region tonight.

A few showers or storms could accompany that front in the mountains and foothills this afternoon and evening, but the piedmont will remain warm and largely dry.

High pressure will wedge down the Eastern Seaboard behind the front Saturday. The result will be a typical Carolina wedge day with clouds, much cooler temperatures, and some light rain or drizzle at times. Temperatures in the Triad region will likely be in the 50s all day with the Charlotte area likely in the 60s.

The wedge breaks down Sunday, and highs Monday will be comparable to what we are seeing for highs this afternoon.

Another cool, wedge scenario then looks on tap by Wednesday and Thursday next week.

November gets off to a mild start

>> Wednesday, November 01, 2017

October is in the books, and all totaled up, temperatures in many Carolina locations ran around 3 degrees above average. Precipitation amounts varied, but in general, many areas were pretty close to average October precipitation amounts.

Highs will run a bit above average around the region through Friday with lots of piedmont highs in the 70s.

A cold front will approach late Friday, and some showers are possible in the mountains Friday afternoon and evening. High pressure will wedge down the Eastern Seaboard behind that front, and Saturday could be a cooler, cloudy day for many in the region as we wedge sets up.

That wedge will then erode, and above average temperatures will resume for early next week.

Cool and quiet... next system arrives this weekend

>> Thursday, October 26, 2017

Thursday is another pretty cool weather day around the region. Sunshine will be plentiful, but mountain highs will be in the 50s with foothill and piedmont highs will struggle to make the lower 60s.

Friday will be about 10 degrees warmer for highs in most spots under a sunny sky.

Our next cold front will approach Saturday. Showers look likely in the mountains during the day Saturday and spreading into the region of the region later Saturday and Saturday night. A coastal low pressure area will also get involved, and some heavier rain amounts could occur over toward the Outer Banks.

Much chillier weather will settle in for Sunday and Monday with a lot of piedmont highs in the 50s.

Cooler and drier air moving in

>> Tuesday, October 24, 2017

It was a rough afternoon and evening Monday across the region. As expected, big-time storms worked through just ahead of a cold front, and a number of wind damage reports as well as possible tornadic reports resulted.

Much quiet weather is unfolding for our Tuesday as drier and cooler air begins to slip into the region. Highs are in the 50s today in the mountains with upper 70s and lower 70s across the piedmont. Tonight, a freeze is likely in many mountain locations, and Freeze Warnings are hoisted for much of the High Country.

Wednesday and Thursday will be fairly cool region-wide with 50s for the mountains and low to mid 60s for much of the piedmont under a sunny sky.

Our next storm system will roll through over the weekend. Some rain is a good bet at some juncture over the weekend, and then the chilliest air thus far this season will take hold by Monday and Tuesday.

Slow warming trend continues, but changes next week

>> Thursday, October 19, 2017

After another chilly start to our day for Thursday, highs will warm into the low and mid 70s for much of the piedmont this afternoon. Mountain highs will likely be in the upper 60s.....all under a sunny sky.

The slow warming trend will continue through Friday and into the weekend with a dry forecast holding on through the weekend as well.

Our next storm system will then arrive early in the week. There remains some timing differences among the various computer models, but for the time being, I will highlight good chance for some rain and embedded storms Monday into early Tuesday.

Following that system, I still expect a shot of the coldest air thus far this season to arrive Wednesday through Friday next week.

Much cooler air has arrived

>> Tuesday, October 17, 2017

After a lot of well above average temperature through October to this point, much cooler autumn air has arrived. This morning, many mountain spots made it down into the 30s, and some locations were in the 30s in the foothills and piedmont.
In spite of full sun, highs today will be in the 50s in the mountains and 60s in the piedmont, and Wednesday's highs will be quite similar.
Lows Wednesday morning will be a little colder in most spots than what occurred Tuesday morning. Widespread frost is possible in the mountains, and some patchy areas of frost are possible in the foothills and piedmont.
A slow warming trend will occur late in the work week and into the weekend, and our next chance of rain and storms arrives Monday. An even colder shot of air will then likely arrive by the middle of next week.

Cooler weather pattern arriving

>> Thursday, October 12, 2017

After multiple days of mid summer-like heat and humidity, a cooler weather pattern is beginning to unfold in the region. Highs Thursday will be below what we have seen on recent days, and Friday's highs will be even cooler.

Look for plenty of clouds at times Thursday and Friday, and some showers will be a possibility at times as well.

The weekend looks great with warm afternoons and good intervals of sunshine. The peak of the fall foliage season is now occurring in the elevations above about 3000' up in the mountains, so this weekend is a great time to head up that way and enjoy the fall colors.

Finally, a push of true cool, dry, more typical October air will arrive next week. Piedmont lows will be well down into the 40s by Monday night, and mountain areas will likely be in the 30s. Afternoons most days next week will be sunny and pleasant.

An airmass more typical of summer remains in place across the Carolinas Tuesday. Foothill and piedmont highs will surge into the 80s, and conditions will remain very humid. Scattered showers and storms will remain a possibility as well.

Again Wednesday, warm and muggy conditions will be in place with scattered showers and storms still a possibility.

High pressure will build down from the Northeast Thursday, so highs will be cooler to wrap up the work week.

The weekend looks warm and dry. Down the road, an airmass more typical of October looks to finally arrive by around next Tuesday.

Saturday Nate Update

>> Saturday, October 07, 2017

Hurricane Nate is heading for a Saturday evening landfall along the central Gulf coast. The greatest issues with storm surge and wind will be along the Mississippi and Alabama Gulf coasts and to a somewhat lesser extent southeastern Louisiana and western-most Florida Panhandle.

For the Carolinas, scattered showers will be with us Saturday, and a couple of rumbles of thunder are also possible. However, the more significant rains from this system will hold off until later tonight into Sunday.

Chances for areas of rain and storms will remain high Sunday and into Monday as well. It will not be a constant rain, but at any juncture, some showers or storms will be a possibility.

Soupy tropical air will remain in place through mid-week, so my forecast will continue to highlight scattered showers and storms.

Rainfall amounts over the next few days will be greatest in the mountains. In the mountains and the immediately adjacent foothills, 3-6" of rain are possible through mid-week. Piedmont rain totals will likely be in the 1-2" range with locally higher amounts.

Big changes are on the way this weekend

>> Friday, October 06, 2017

After some excellent Autumn weather again unfolds around the region Friday, big weather changes take place this weekend.

Tropical Storm Nate, now in the western Caribbean Sea, will send tropical moisture into the southeastern US. This moisture will interact with an approaching frontal system and provide us with increasing opportunities for rain as the weekend rolls along.

Saturday will feature some scattered showers, mainly during the afternoon. But the majority of the rain will occur Sunday into Monday.

Exact rain amounts remain questionable, but in general, I think many in the region could receive 1-2" when all is said and done. The mountains could easily exceed 3" when all is totaled.

Considering most of us haven't had measurable rain since the second week of September, this is welcome news.

More of the same is on tap weather-wise here in the Carolinas over the next few days. And that is not a bad thing..... we have enjoyed spectacular October weather over the last few days.

Our forecast remains dry through Friday with cool nights and warm sunny afternoons. In fact, foothill and piedmont spots will likely top out in the 80s for highs Thursday and Friday.

Over the weekend, rain chances will be on the increase. A tropical low pressure area will continue to try to develop in the western Caribbean Sea, and that system should lift into the Gulf of Mexico this weekend. The eventual track that system takes will determine our weather specifics, but the general idea is for us to have good rain chances Sunday and Monday here in the Carolinas.

We finally had some beautiful, more typical fall weather settle in over the weekend with comfortable afternoons and cool nights. The weather pattern will remain essentially the same over the next several days with only a subtle warming trend each day.

Most piedmont highs will remain in the 70s through mid-week with lows in the 40s and 50s. Mountain areas will have highs in the 60s to 70s.

Rain chances will remain scarce through the work week with only slowly increasing rain chances by Sunday and next Monday.

...A big temperature change is on the way...

Again Wednesday, many locations in the region approached or even tied record highs for the day. One final really warm day is unfolding for our Thursday before some big-time weather changes occur.

After piedmont highs again today make a run to near 90, a cold front will slide through over the next 24 hours. An isolated shower could accompany the front ins some areas, but the bigger story is the temperature change that is on the way.

Foothill and piedmont highs Friday and the weekend will only be in the 70s with mountain highs in the 60s. Morning lows will drop well down into the 50s for the foothills and piedmont, and some of the normally cooler locations will likely have 40s, especially Sunday morning. A few cooler mountains spots could have 30s Sunday morning!

The nice Autumn weather looks to continue to much of next week as well.

Late Morning Update for Incoming Winter Storm

>> Friday, January 06, 2017

Today's video has all of the details:

The short-range 12z models are rolling in, and I don't see any reason for any big forecast changes.

Warmer air aloft will try to work in with this system and cause some snow to mix in with sleet or even rain in some areas. I expect the Triad and the northern and western Charlotte metro, and probably Charlotte proper, to stay all or mostly snow. But near and southeast of a line from just SE of Charlotte to Albemarle to near Asheboro to near Raleigh, the threat of some mixing (which would reduce snow totals) is definitely there. It's a very fine line.

On the flip side, locations just NW of the mixing line are often the big winners regarding snow totals. So it's the dance you have to dance if you are hunting for the best snows.

In locations that remain all snow, a solid 6-10" looks likely, and there is definitely the chance some areas exceed 10". And as always, there will be some places the under-perform and only get a couple of inches.

PLEASE TAKE NOTE that it will be bitterly cold following the system. Please make preparations for a means to stay warm in the event you happen to lose power.

Snow potential and brutal cold on the way....

>> Wednesday, January 04, 2017

Above is the video. Really challenging forecast still regarding snow potential. Frankly, there is way more disagreement between the various computer models than I would like to see at this range. A few differences I'm looking at:

* RPM and Canadian model are much quicker with the arrival of precip than most models.

* GFS remains further south with the system.

* European model generally the furthest north and strongest with the system.

* Individual ensemble members of GFS and European are generally boom or bust... either big snows or weak and next to nothing.

* GFS snow footprint has been trending slowly northward over the last several runs. Not big adjustments, but they are there. See below:

It is still too early in the game for me to mention specific accumulation ideas, but here's the idea from me at this point:

I think the European solution is about as far north as this can go, and I think there's a decent chance the GFS continues to slowly adjust north.

However, the weakening seen in the latest UKMET model (see video) gives me some pause, and there is still a chance this could wind up trending weaker, as some of those ensemble members I mentioned indicate.

If you want a decent system, the overall key is keeping this piece of energy rolling through the southern Plains as independent and intense as possible .
