Here are some shots of just a bit of the fairly extensive storm damage from yesterday evening's storms in Belmont.

Scattered showers and storms through the weekend...

A big-time round of storms developed early Thursday afternoon in the foothills, then spread southeast into the Piedmont. The CLT metro area had much of the worst of the storms with some localized flash flooding, wind damage, and hail.

The cooler regime has settled in, and most spots in the region will have highs in the mid to upper 80s today into the weekend. Today and tomorrow will feature scattered showers and storms. Then on Sunday, our next cold front will be nearing, and I anticipate a good coverage of storms. Some storms could be severe at times the next few days.

Behind that front, the weather still looks nice for a large portion of next work week. There might be a few lingering showers or storms Monday underneath a big upper trough, but Tuesday and Wednesday look fantastic with 80s for highs, lows well down into the 60s, and low humidity.

Tropics...

Two tropical waves in the eastern Atlantic need watching. The lead wave (92L) will likely wind up curving north in the Atlantic before it could threaten the US. The second wave (93L) looks to take a farther south track, and that alone increases the overall chance of an eventual US threat.

I discuss these waves in today's video, and of course we will continue to update you on News 14 Carolina in our Tropical Updates at :21 and :51 past the hour. Lots of information is also available on the Tropical Weather portion of this site.

The heat will gradually back down over the next few days. Highs today look to be in the lower 90s in many areas with upper 80s and low 90s tomorrow then some 80s over the weekend into next week.

A few showers or storms are possible today and tomorrow as well.

Over the weekend, a cold front will approach and move through, bringing good shower and storm chances along with it, especially Saturday night and Sunday. Behind that front, the weather looks very nice for a good chunk of next work week with 80s for highs, lows way down into the 60s, and low humidity.

Tropics...

Several areas of interest in the tropics....the most interesting of which is the eastern Atlantic where a couple of strong tropical waves have emerged off of the African coast. One or both of these waves could develop in coming days.....see the video for lots of graphics on this.

Changes on the way...

>> Wednesday, August 10, 2011

Our Wednesday will still be fairly hot with 90s for highs across the region. However, drier air is already moving in, and humidity levels should be quite low this afternoon. Look for lots of sun through the day as well.

A couple of pieces of upper level energy will ripple through the region tomorrow and Friday, and I will word in the chance of a few showers and storms accordingly. Beginning tomorrow, highs in many spots will remain below the 90 degree mark on most days through the next week or so.

A stronger cold front will move through this weekend. Along with the front will come good shower and storm chances, especially late Saturday through Sunday.

Behind the front, a delightful airmass will settle in Monday through Wednesday or so of next week. I would not be at all surprised if a few of the traditionally cooler Piedmont spots managed to dip into the upper 50s for lows by Tuesday or Wednesday morning.

See the video for some thoughts on what might be brewing in the tropics...

Still hot today, but cooler air just around the corner

>> Tuesday, August 09, 2011

Highs today will warm well up into the 90s across the region. However, changes are coming.

As a cold front approaches today, we will have the chance of a few showers and storms around the region. While I don't think the storms will be particularly numerous, the storms that do form could be strong to severe.

Drier air will move in by tomorrow afternoon, and the cooler air follow suit by Thursday. Many spots Thursday into next week will see mainly 80s for highs and 60s for lows.

Another, stronger cold front will move in this weekend and bring some showers and storms, especially late Saturday into Sunday. Behind that front, a more significant push of cooler air will arrive for Monday and Tuesday.

Hot weather early this week....pattern change ahead...

>> Monday, August 08, 2011

A couple of incredible rain events unfolded Friday and Saturday. Friday's rains were focused around the Charlotte metro, and then Saturday morning, the action was around the Triangle. In both cases, many spots had rain totals in the 3-5" range, and obviously, flooding was a big problem.

Highs will be well up into the 90s today and tomorrow....even near or exceeding 100 around the RDU and Sandills regions. An isolated storm or two is possible this afternoon, and the chances are a little greater tomorrow.

Pattern change...

See the video for some graphics to go along with this. A series of disturbances will gradually carve out a trough over the eastern US, and the result will be some cooler weather in our future. For many of us, Thursday-onward will feature some 80s for highs and 60s for lows. Another cold front will move through over the weekend, and we might have an even more significant push of cooler air behind that one, depending on the depth of the trough.

Nothing chilly, but at least a nice relaxation of the heat.

Tropics...

Emily, after regaining depression status over the weekend, has fallen apart this morning, and it is finished. Our next tropical system will probably come from an African tropical wave, but no immediate signs of that happening at the moment.
