Quiet today...next system not far off....

>> Wednesday, February 03, 2010

After a foggy, dreary start to our Wednesday, we will get a nice chance to dry out today with lots of sunshine and highs in the upper 40s to lower 50s.

However, the very active storm track continues, and we will see our next system begin to spread precip in as soon as Thursday night.

I am still working on the details of this one, but some wintry weather could certainly be involved. As it stands now, the precip could initially begin as a period of snow or sleet Thursday night into Friday morning. Temperatures aloft then warm, and the Piedmont would transition to either freezing rain or rain, depending on surface temps. As it stands now, a significant ice event is looking likely in the foothills, and that ice could extend to some Piedmont locations, especially northwest sections. The system could then end as at least some snow by Saturday.

We are dealing with a cold air damming scenario here, and the exact temps and dewpoints inside the wedge will be the determining factor in precip type. This is tough to resolve much in advance, so stay tuned.....

What are your thoughts for Iredell(specifically the western point, Scotts?) Thanks I dont mean to be specific, but were right on the line and NWS has 5-7 inches of snow and then 1/2 inch of ice for us, but nobody else is really making a big deal out of it. http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Scotts&state=NC&site=GSP&textField1=35.8428&textField2=-81.0094

Matt,
Got a trip to Boone coming up now (tomorrow) and I'm getting a little concerned about an ice storm this weekend. Don't mind a snow dump but an ice storm....I don't want to be there with ice on roads/power issues.

Is it looking more like an ice storm for Boone or mostly snow? Thanks!

Brad

I agree with Anonymous there. They MUST be seeing something that we don't that they would even bother mentioning snow accumulations SOUTH of I-40.......

Does northern Person county get any snow and ice accumulation from this next storm we tend to run cold over this way. Also is there going to a problem with black tomorrow morning? And do you think we still have plenty more snow/ice to come for our area?Chris

Matthew,
I've also been reading Jeff Crum's blog and he doesn't think this coming weekend's event is going to be significant snow for Charlotte area; however, he did mention that next week (Tuesday/Wednesday) storm will be more significant. Have you had chance to look that further down the road? I guess things are indeed getting pretty busy. I don't think I've seen anything like this during the 6 years I've lived in CLT.

God bless,
TY

Really enjoy your blog and wx explanations. Traditional newscasts can't allocate enough time to tell the whole story. Thanks!..Can you set up an RSS feed?

I think the concern is valid about cold overwhelming the pattern for a while....we will see.

See my morning discussion and video today for my updated thoughts.

Thanks for the comments.

Greta, I will see if I can do that....
