Texas Supercell

>> Saturday, June 13, 2009

Here are a couple of photos my buddy Hank Allen, a meteorologist at WGNO in New Orleans, LA sent to me yesterday. He is taking a few vacation days to head out with our friend Nathan Moore, a meteorologist at Impact Weather in Houston, to do some storm chasing in the Plains states.

Yesterday they were on a storm west of Ft. Worth that produced multiple tornadoes. They have better photos in their cameras, but these were just a couple from Hank's cell phone during the time between the supercell's first and second tornado.

Nasty derecho approaching Memphis. This formed from the mean cluster of storms in Kansas I was showing on the air this morning. This is producing lots of wind damage and a relatively rare 'PDS' Severe Thunderstorm Watch.

More scattered storms possible today...

Above is today's edition of the Carolina Weather Video.

After another active round of showers and storms yesterday, we will continue to have the chance of some scattered showers and storms today. Highs will be in the mid to upper 80s, and again today, some of the storms could produce damaging winds, large hail, prolific lightning, and briefly heavy rain.

Today's risk of showers and storms is largely due to a cold front dropping in from the northwest. It looks like some slightly drier air will try to work in here for the weekend. Because of that, while a few storms are possible both tomorrow and Sunday, the overall coverage looks to be much less than what we have seen the past couple of days.

Next week it looks like we will get into a northwest flow aloft. That will mean we have the chance of occasional complexes of storms rolling through, but timing those out this far in advance is almost impossible.

It also looks a bit cooler next week with some lower 80s for highs and lower 60s for lows.

All right, tonight is it. Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals. It has been a great series, and I expect a hard-fought game tonight. Should be a lot of fun. Go Wings!

Enjoy your weekend!

Another round of storms today into tonight....

Above is today's edition of the Carolina Weather Video.

Be sure and scroll below this post to see some photos from the storms yesterday...as always, we welcome your pictures weather@news14.com

We will likely see a healthy round of rain and storms press through the region later today into this evening. Like we have seen on recent days, some storms will likely be severe with damaging winds, large hail, frequent lightning, and locally heavy rainfall all possible. Highs today should be in the mid to upper 80s.

The showers and storms will likely be widespread this evening, then taper off overnight. Lows will be in the upper 60s.

A cold front will drop in tomorrow and bring the chance of at least some scattered afternoon showers and storms. Highs will be in the mid to upper 80s to near 90.

The chance of rain and storms will decrease Saturday, but another decent round of showers and storms looks to roll through Sunday. Weekend highs will be in the mid to possibly upper 80s.

Not a lot of changes for next work week with the chance of some scattered afternoon storms continuing with highs in the 80s.

More scattered storms ahead...

>> Wednesday, June 10, 2009

Above is today's edition of the Carolina Weather Video.

Scattered thunderstorms traversed the Carolinas yesterday into last night, and many of those storms were severe with damaging winds, large hail, and frequent lightning.

Today will be a warm and muggy day with highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s. We will see a few storms develop this afternoon, and again, some severe weather could occur.

We will have the potential to see some overnight showers and storms tonight as storms from the Mississippi Valley try to make it our way. Lows will be in the upper 60s.

Tomorrow looks like a rather active day around the Carolinas with a good chance of showers and storms and highs in the mid to upper 80s.

I will maintain the chance of scattered PM storms for Friday and the weekend.

Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals occurred last night. Read no further if you don't want to know the outcome.

Enjoyable game all around. Pittsburgh was the better team for the first half of the game, but the Red Wings really turned it on from the end of the second period through the third. However, the Penguins prevailed, winning 2-1 to force a Game 7 Friday night in Detroit.

I hate the Wings couldn't close it out, but we have another crack at it at home Friday night. Plus, it will be a home game, and there is nothing like a Game 7 environment with the Cup on the line. Great stuff....

Scattered storms....

Above is today's edition of the Carolina Weather Video.

Today's forecast will feature the chance of scattered showers and storms as a storm system skirt by to our north. It will be quite warm with many folks warming into the lower 90s for highs, and that will lead to an unstable airmass this afternoon. A few strong to severe storms are possible with large hail and damaging winds being the main threats.

The number of showers and storms will be lower tomorrow with highs in the lower 90s. Then we will ramp back up the chance of some scattered mainly afternoon and evening showers and storms Thursday through the weekend. Highs Thursday will be in the lower 90s, then highs back down into the 80s as we head through the weekend.

In the tropics, the area of disturbed weather in the Caribbean is less organized today, and development looks unlikely.

On the hockey front, my Red Wings will try and win the Stanley Cup tonight in Game 6 vs. the Penguins.....let's go Wings!

Warm and muggy....

Above is today's edition of the Carolina Weather Video.

After a nice weather weekend, we are beginning the work week with a warm day with highs in the upper 80s to near 90. A few isolated late-day shower or storms are possible today, but the chance of rain in any one Piedmont location today is pretty small. The showers and storms will be more numerous in the mountains and on the coastal Plain.

I anticipate a better chance of Piedmont showers and storms tomorrow afternoon and evening as some better dynamics come into play. A few stong to severe storms can't be ruled out either. High temps will be in the upper 80s to near 90.

Each day this week will ahve at least some chance of some afternoon showers and storms. The chances will probably increase again late in the work week and into the weekend as a cold front approaches and stalls out nearby. Highs will remain in the mid to upper 80s with lows in the 60s.

In the tropics, there is an area of low pressure in the western Caribbean Sea that might show some slow signs of development over the next couple of days. We will watch it.

Did you see any of the footage from the Vortex 2 crew from Friday? The team was able to document the entire life-cycle of a tornado....some pretty compelling video.

Scour youtube.....the video is out there. Amazing stuff.
