A few strong storms possible today

>> Saturday, May 02, 2009

Scattered showers and storms will likely fire around the Carolinas later this afternoon into early this evening. The SPC has the area in a 'slight' risk of severe weather for the period.

The overall setup is fairly diffuse. An upper level disturbance is approaching from the west. There is a cold front off to our northwest, and there are some residual outflow boundaries scattered across the Carolinas.

Highs today should warm into the loo to mid 80s, and with dewpoints in the upper 50s to lower 60s, the atmosphere should become relatively unstable.

As the upper level disturbance approaches, shower and storm chances should be enhanced along those outflow boundaries. Exactly where that will be is tough to tell in advance.

The crew at News 14 Carolina will keep you completely up to date on television if any active weather does fire.

Scattered showers and storms...

Above is today's edition of the Carolina Weather Video.

Interesting forecast today. We have an MCV (mesoscale convective vortex) approaching our area. That MCV formed from storms in the southern Plains yesterday morning. That MCV should help to enhance the chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms, mainly this afternoon. A couple of storms might produce some damaging winds as well.

We are entering a pattern which will feature a daily chance of some scattered afternoon storms. That will be the case this weekend, and that looks like the case for much of next work week.

So, if you will be out at the Quail Hollow, it will not be a wash-out. But you will have to to dodge some scattered showers and storms, mainly during the afternoon hours.

Summer-like forecast

>> Thursday, April 30, 2009

A fairly quiet weather day is unfolding today with highs in the upper 70s to near 80. Some intervals of sunshine will work in at times.

Another cold front is approaching our area from the northwest, and ahead of that front, a few isolated showers or storms are possible tomorrow afternoon with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s.

That next front will stall out just to our north this weekend. That will mean a better coverage of scattered showers and storms during the afternoon and evening hours. Highs look to be in the low to mid 80s.

More of the same as we head through next work week.... warm afternoons with mild nighttime temps and a chance of some mainly afternoon showers and storms.

On another note, mom and baby seem to be slowly coming around. But since they were still not feeling well, it was just me, Jayden, and Grace at church last night. Juli stayed home with mom and Evie. After church, it was time for a treat.....31 cent scoop night at Baskin Robbins! Excellent. The kids went with chocolate chip cookie dough.....good choice!

A few showers and storms possible late today

Above is today's edition of the Carolina Weather Video.

Yesterday turned out to be a delightful day with pleasant temps and a nice afternoon breeze. Today will feature more clouds than what we say yesterday, but still a nice day overall with highs in the upper 70s to lower 80s in the Piedmont.

A weak cold front is sagging into the region from the north, and that front will likely be enough to kick of a few isolated showers or storms late this afternoon and this evening. These will be hit and miss with most folks probably falling in the 'miss' category.

That front will lift back northward as a warm front tomorrow, and that should translate to dry weather here in the Piedmont tomorrow and Friday.

Another cold front will approach from the north Saturday and stall out just to our north. This will provide for fairly unsettled weekend weather. The weekend will not be a wash-out, but I anticipate a pretty good coverage of scattered afternoon showers and storms Saturday and Sunday.

The weather will remain relatively unsettled into next work week with the chances of some afternoon showers and storms continuing.

On another note, Evie is now 3 weeks old. She has been great....the best sleeper of any of our kids, very calm, and mild-mannered. However, the poor thing got severe nasal congestion Monday evening, and that has wreaked havoc on her sleeping. My wife and I have also been battling sinus issues. I seem to be on the mend, but my wife is still knee-deep in it. Hopefully they will improve today. Nothing serious, but when an infant has trouble breathing...not a good thing.

Pattern gradually changing....

Above is today's edition of the Carolina Weather Video.

The big upper ridge that has been bringing us all of the warm and dry weather is beginning to breakdown today. We will still see lots of sunshine, but the heat will continue to back down....mainly low to mid 80s for highs today.

A weakening cold front will drop toward the area from the north tomorrow. Due to the close proximity of the front, we will see more clouds tomorrow as well as the chance of a few isolated showers and storms later tomorrow afternoon.

Beginning tomorrow, I can't rule out a few afternoon showers or storms really any day right into early next work week. The best chance of scattered showers and storms will likely be Saturday as another front approaches from the north.

We are also finished with the way above average temps for a while. Highs this weekend into early next week will mainly be in the 70s.

Back at it....

I want to take a moment and give a huge 'thank you' to all of the staff here at News 14 Carolina. Lots of slack had to be picked up during my leave time, and my family and I greatly appreciate it.

Evie and the rest of the family are doing very well. Jayden had her 6th birthday party with some of her friends Saturday. Grace and Julianna are doing very well too. I appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers.

So, back into the work routine this morning. That means an all-new edition of the Carolina Weather Video is embedded above.

Summer-like warmth will continue today with highs in the mid to upper 80s...some spots could again hit 90. However, the big ridge over the southeast will slowly break down this week. It will be a gradual process.

Highs tomorrow will again be up toward the mid 80s. For Wednesday and Thursday, I cannot rule out a couple of isolated showers or storms, but the better chances will likely occur Friday and especially this weekend. Highs by the weekend will be back much closer to normal....low to mid 70s.
