Sunny Monday...Arctic Express on the Way...

>> Monday, January 12, 2009

Above is today's edition of the Carolina Weather Video. Give it a watch...

Sunshine today with highs in the upper 40s to around 50.

The first in a series of clipper system will approach us tonight into tomorrow. We will see clouds increasing tonight as an area of low pressure develops off of the Southeast coast. As tomorrow unfolds, some mainly light rain will spread through the eastern Carolinas, probably at least as far westward as Raleigh. Whether or not the rain makes it as far as Charlotte or the Triad is a question mark, but it looks like the lower 3-4 thousand feet of the atmosphere will be warm enough for the precip to remain in the form of rain even if it does make it back this far.

A big-time plunge of arctic air will begin flowing in here Thursday. Thursday will likely be a day with falling temps in the afternoon as the cold air blows in. For the Triad market this morning, I have a low temp of 12 degrees for both Friday and Saturday morning, with a highs Friday of 30. We very well could see single digits in some spots, especially Saturday morning, if the sky remains clear and winds light.

There is some potential for a storm system around next Monday, but details are sketchy at best.

Matt,
Lows in the teens and highs in the 30s....we had that in December didn't we? Doesn't seem it's the coldest of the season much less than in previous years. That's fine though, if you're not going to have snow with it what's the use of being cold?! :)

Matthew,

I have a question for you. I've lived in the Charlotte area all my life, and it seemed like every winter back in the late 70's into the 80's we got 2-4 good snows every year. Now, it seems that we are lucky to see a couple of flurries each winter. In your opinion, do you think this is due to "global warming", is it a long term weather pattern change, or is it something else? All I know is, the winters around here aren't like they use to be.

"Sorry snow fans, none in our forecast and it doesn't look good for the next few weeks." Guess im not gonna get to have that homemade snow cream :(

Brad, Charlotte has not officially dipped in the teens yet this winter. We did have a day with highs in the 30s in December, but it was 1 day. This is going to be a 30day stretch of cold weather with likely 2 morning way down in the teens for lows.

David, I absolutely do NOT think our current lack of snow has anything to do with global warming. In fact, I think much of that is hooey, but I won't get in to that now.

We had some great winters back earlier in this decade with numerous very significant winter storms. Last winter's overall weather pattern was terrible for trying to get a winter storm in here. This winter's is better. We will see. You have to remember it really takes a lot of luck to get significant winter weather around here. You are right, we don't normally go 3 winters without at least a 2-3" snowstorm., but I don't think 'global warming' has a thing to do with it.

Hope this helps...

Matt,
Well I guess it wasn't in Winter but back on November 20th it got down to 18 degrees and on November 23rd it got down to 13 degrees (according to NWS site). It got in the 40s though for highs but I distinctly remember the teens this year for lows. With that in mind it doesn't look like what's coming is THAT cold. It IS cold though!

Brad, no, you are right. I remember that November cold. That was record breaking.

What might really keep this outbreak from being something is if we have winds kick up Friday night or some clouds roll in. If we don't have either of those, some spots could definitely see single digits. And like I said, we are talking 20s for highs in most Piedmont spots Friday. Pretty nasty stuff. Cold enough, like you said!

Matthew,

Thanks for your thoughts on global warming. I'm not sold on the idea either. I think some people play it out to be a bigger deal than what it really is. I think it could possibly be a factor, but I think it has much more to do with the natural changes in weather patterns.
