Saturday morning...

*House-cleaning note....the Twitter feed is over near the top of the right sidebar....I should move it back to the top of this section if we get into active weather later today....

A mid-level disturbance will pivot through our area today and give the Carolinas some afternoon and evening showers and storms. Enough parameters are in place for there to be some conern for severe weather. Damaging winds and some small hail will be the main threats.

I think the shower and storm chances will be the lowest in the NW Piedmont with chances getting better once to and east of I-85. I expect most of the storm from mid-afternoon through the evening.

Tara Lane will be holding down the fort for the Triad and Charlotte markets into this afternoon....Monte Montello and myself will be in to take over for the evening shift. Keep it tuned to News 14 Carolina for all of the latest weather developments...

Friday Evening...

>> Friday, August 01, 2008

Fairly hot this afternoon, but dewpoints are lower today than in recent days, making it a little more tolerable.

A disturbance will swing through Saturday afternoon and evening. To me, this has the look of a system that brings through some low-topped, gusty wind-producing thunderstorms. So, we will be keeping an eye on that potential tomorrow afternoon and evening.

It will stay pretty hot into next week. In fact, I anticipate mid to possibly even some upper 90s Tuesday and Wednesday. Our next shot of some rain and storms will then roll in later Wednesday and Thursday.

On another note, we have wrapped up Jayden's swimming lessons. This morning, they had sort of a pool party where the families could swim with the kids. They had snacks afterwards. I can tell I am getting older....mixing Doritos, Oatmeal Cream pies, goldfish, chocolate chip cookies, and cups of ice cream in my stomach late in the morning didn't feel so good.

3:30pm update...

Severe weather threat unfolding through the region. The storms will continue to shift through the area at a pretty good clip, and frankly, it looks like the severe weather threat will be over by mid-evening at the latest. We will see though.

The storms are putting down outflow boundaries really as soon as they develop. So, each individual storm collapses about as quick as it develops....classic pulse-type severe weather.

Thursday...

We will likely see a good number of showers and storms firing off this afternoon across the Foothills and Piedmont. Temperatures aloft should be a bit cooler today compared to yesterday, and a little bit more in the way of dynamics will be in play today...mainly in the form of some stronger winds aloft.

Notice the short wave back in the Ohio Valley here off of this NAM chart. It is what has caused the showers and storms approaching the mountains this morning. That short wave might actually be what is left of Dolly.

The SPC has highlighted much of the region in a 'slight' risk of severe weather. Today looks like a day where we will see some multi-cell and pulse type storms, some of which will likely occasionally be severe.

Damaging winds will likely be the primary threat, but with the cooler temperatures aloft today, some hail will also be possible. The tornado threat, while not completely absent, is quite low.

The best window of opportunity for severe weather will be mid-afternoon through late this evening.

Jeff will be handling duties late this afternoon and this evening for the Charlotte market, and I will be on the air for the Triad.

Dog Days....

Yep, it is that time of year again. At some point every summer we get into this pattern of 90s for highs for the foreseeable future and muggy conditions. It is here. My 7-day forecast has highs in the low to mid 90s each day through next Wednesday with most lows in the lower 70s.

Today and tomorrow we will have some scattered afternoon thunderstorms, but after that, rain chances look pretty slim through mid-week next week.

Let's take a look at the upcoming weekend. We are getting closer to the end of summer for students, and a lot of folks will likely be doing some traveling.

If you are heading to the Carolina coast, Friday could feature a few showers and storms, but Saturday and Sunday look warm, humid, and mainly rain-free.

Up in the mountains, same type of deal....a few storms possible Friday, but mainly dry Saturday and Sunday with weekend highs in the mountains in the 80s.

Around here, a few storms that fire this afternoon could push severe limits with damaging winds being the primary severe weather threat. Keep it tuned to News 14 Carolina if the weather gets active....

Tuesday....

Wow! Some persistent showers and storms fired over portions of the viewing area Monday evening into last night. It sure was good to see some nice rain falling in the western sections of the Charlotte region.....that area had managed to miss almost all of the rain over the past couple of weeks.

Gastonia recorded over 1.5" with over 1" in Shelby.
